Even in zero-g, Hadfield’s worth his weight in gold

NASA may have found the man they are looking for. And he is Canadian.

Chris Hadfield, retired Royal Canadian Air Force colonel and current Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut, has been busy. Since last December, he has been orbiting the Earth aboard the International Space Station’s (ISS), in company with American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts. In March, he will be the first Canadian to take command.

Hadfield has been engaged in high-tech experiments and research. But he’s been doing a lot more than that: Taking stunning photos of the Earth, tweeting about life in space and getting chummy via Twitter with the stars of the legendary original Star Trek television series and films. (Indeed, the Canadian Space Agency arranged a live chat between Hadfield and William “James T. Kirk” Shatner on Thursday, and streamed it on their website.) He also “dropped” the puck, via video link, at the Toronto Maple Leaf’s home opener.

It’s in these unofficial roles that Hadfield is excelling. He’s a NASA star, having held a variety of very senior positions there, and had a distinguished military career before that. But NASA didn’t need another fighter jock or brilliant scientist. It’s got enough of those. It needs someone who can fire up the public and get them excited about space travel.

He’s a Leafs fan. I pretty much lost interest after seeing that.

If he’s not pimping global warming, and making muslims feel good, he’s not of any value to NASA.

Joke:

How do Canadian astronauts get into space?

The same way the Americans do, on a Russian rocket.

It's actually not that funny.
