Michelle Obama Commission On Religious Child Abuse Is Now Urgent
Chrisian Catholicism ^ | Friday, February 8, 2013 | Jerry Slevin

Two events within the last few months confirmed conclusively that local law enforcement in the USA cannot prevent Catholic Church leaders from facilitating predatory priests who sexually abuse children. Documents just released in Los Angeles and others released in Philadelphia a few months earlier show this. Two Cardinals, Mahony and Bevilacqua, oversaw numerous predatory priests who were enabled to continue to abuse children repeatedly even after the Cardinals knew the priests were predators.

It is the same old story that played out with Cardinal Law in Boston a decade before and in many other U.S. dioceses since. Local prosecutors beholden to the political clout of local Cardinals and Bishops apparently looked the other way for decades. As a retired international lawyer and lifelong practicing Catholic, I am convinced these outrages will continue until the Federal government steps up. No one else has the clout to stand up to the power of the Vatican.

Many have already signed a petition calling on President Obama to step up. More signatures are needed and will help. Please take a minute and sign it at: http://www.change.org/petitions/president-obama-investigate-child-sexual-abuse-by-priests-rabbis-religious-leaders

President Obama should consider appointing First Lady Michelle Obama to chair the new Obama commission. She is well respected as a Harvard lawyer and devoted mother. He growing children now need less of her time and she would be an ideal choice with her established credibility.

Michelle could consult with another former practicing lawyer, Julia Gillard, Australia’s Prime Minister, who just established a national investigation commission that already has the Catholic hierarchy and the Vatican running for cover.

If Michelle manages this, President Obama would be able to focus on his many other priorities, including resisting the Pope’s and his plutocratic Republican contributors’ unrelenting and opportunistic efforts to derail Obamacare over contraception insurance and immigration reform over gay marriage.

Well lets start with the White Hut. Get rid of the Education Czar (whatever his name is) who happens to be a supporter of NAMBLA. Talk about the Pot calling Kettle black.

I can't even figure out what this numbnut means by the second part of this. Contraception insurance relates to Obamacare, OK. How does gay "marriage" relate to immigration reform?

This writer is a lifelong Catholic? Sounds like he wants to be more a member of the "Church of What's Happening Now".

If he wants Michelle Obama to oversee a commission on 'Religious Child Abuse', will she also over see the commission on 'Teacher and Administrator Child Abuse'? There is more sexual abuse of children by teachers, and others associated with public schools, than there were children abused by priests. It's not exclusive to the Catholic Church, though it sounds as though the MSM is finally going after Mahoney, even though folks in LA have known about predatory priests for years, even, I'd wager, some folks in the local media. I guess they finally decided to go after this issue there, because they think they can use it to again reduce the Church's credibility on the issues of Obamacare and homosexual marriage.

I know that's why they went after Bernie Law, in Boston, when they did. There were folks in the police, and the justice system, who knew about the abuse for years, but a couple of the abusive priests were big Democrats, and supportive of their local politician, so no one ever went after them. One of the priests was a supporter of NAMBLA. It was only when the issue of homosexual marriage came up that they decided to try to cut the Church off at the knees so it wouldn't be a threat. Yes, the abusive priests SHOULD have been punished, but that could have happened years before, if the police had investigated. When Father Porter, from Fall River, MA, was arrested and ended up in jail for child sexual abuse, they were not averse to going after him, and obviously the Church didn't block them, so they DID go after some abusers, just not all of them.

And I don't believe that carp about needing the Federal Govt. to be involved because the politicians were 'scared of the power of the Vatican'. That's a load of horse hockey. The Vatican doesn't usually govern what the Bishops do within their Dioceses; it is up to the Bishop to remove a priest, if he believes there is cause. Many Bishops in the late 60s and early 70s went along with the notion that the abusers could be 'cured', and they were too concerned for their priests, in the pastoral sense. Of course we know now that abusers can't be cured, but at that time, mental health professionals thought they could, so the Bishops sent these men to distant facilities, hoping they'd change. They didn't of course, but I haven't seen any of the psychiatrists who cleared them back to their Dioceses being questioned and excoriated for returning them.

The Catholic Church today in the US has some of the most stringent requirements for anyone, be it a priest, an employee, a contractor or a volunteer who has any kind of involvement with a parish church, school or other area with exposure to children, including a hospital.

I am in the process of doing volunteer work for our local hospital chaplain service. It is amazing as to how much I am being required to do before I can even begin work as a volunteer. Our diocese requires me to take two courses on child abuse, both several hours long. One is from the diocese, and the other is from the State of California. In addition the diocese is requiring me to take a several hour course on visitations to the sick.

The hospital is requiring physical exams to insure that I do not have TB and that I am capable of full mobility. Further, they require a complete background check. Lastly, if I pass all of that, I get to attend a three hour orientation on hospital volunteering.

I doubt there is an organization in the US today that has more stringent standards than the Catholic Church when it comes to protecting our children.

No doubt, what has happened within the Catholic Church over the past 50 years is very sad. However, where is the outrage over the sexual abuse within our public schools, and within Protestant churches and Jewish temples? In our previous neighborhood, the sexual abuse of adult women by two separate pastors of the local Congregational Church was outrageous. Yet, it never made the news.

Perhaps Lady Michelle should comfort a child that had Female Genitalia Mutilation like I have. Maybe she would include the Muslims that commit that vile act on a child.
(Nothing was done to the Somali parents that hurt that child as it was a religious observation.)

Somehow I doubt any look at “religious child abuse” will include Muslims or Atheists
