Russian bill looks to hide gay identity, affirm democracy of the majority

Russia's State Duma is preparing a bill that will ban "homosexual propaganda," which even supporters admit will effectively criminalize almost any overt public expression of gay sexual identity. The public battle over the draft law has highlighted two different visions of Russian "democracy" and pitted them against each other.

The bill, which passed its first Duma reading late last month with just one deputy opposing it, will outlaw gay parades and gay-themed events, as well as ban the dissemination of information about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues. It heads into its crucial second reading early next week, with most experts saying it enjoys overwhelming political support and is unlikely to see any major amendments. The draft law would impose fines of up to $165 for individuals who violate the rules, and up to $165,000 for organizations.

Supporters of the bill, which is strongly backed by the powerful Russian Orthodox Church, argue that Russia is a non-Western and "conservative" democracy that defends traditional values and shields the feelings of the majority from the aggressive encroachments of pushy minorities. They say they're not out to persecute gay people, but that they must not be allowed to bring their sexual orientation into the open, where it may influence the attitudes of minors and offend the beliefs of most Russians.

While I know Russia doesn't have a real democracy at this time, I can't say I really disagree with this. I think a lot of traditional Russian people see what is going on in much of the West and find it utterly revolting. Good grief, even the Boy Scouts are about to be destroyed by this aggressive, obnoxious gay agenda.

We have gun control and the Russians have gay control. They are smart. It is one thing to ignore what gays do in the privacy of their bedrooms. It is another thing to condone the parades, the propagandizing and promoting of their deviant lifestyle. This time the Russians have it right.

“Except for Communism the Russians are a lot smarter than us.”

The Russians are still smarter than us. See, they had the sense to get rid of communism while we’re in the middle of adopting it.

Tell me the girl in that picture is gay? If not, would someone please explain that dress to me?

Amen to that Brother:

Teaching kids in school that Homo’s are normal, and allowing Homo clubs in High School.

Nothing but invitations to Homo orgies.

I totally agree. As corrupt and at times dysfunctional as the Russian government is, they’re making a good decision for the Russian people here. I don’t care what people do in their own bedroom. That’s between them and God, but when you start to ram it down the throat of people on the street, public school children, and the public at large, you’ve crossed a line. Not necessarily a constitutional line, but a Judeo-Christian society line.
The fact is, every national culture has a right to promote itself and preserve itself. People in Abrahamic societies have it very good. We allow much more freedom socially than say, Islamic societies. We only require a baseline of basic values. The promotion of deviancy violates this line. Russians recognize that and we should to.

What exactly was so bad about the time when homosexuals were ‘in the closet’? They weren’t attacked, and we weren’t offended. It was a better time. Homosexuals continue the mantra of “it’s none of your business!”. They’re right. It’s none of my business, so I don’t want to know about it, hear about it, or have my kids educated in it. Keep that crap behind closed doors, just as Russian citizens will soon be doing, and not a moment too soon.

Never thought I’d be admiring Russia, but on this issue, I am.

Never thought I’d ever come to such a conclusion, but taking everything into consideration, it looks much more likely to me that Russia will ultimately out-survive America, as we continue to decay culturally, morally and economically. Russia obviously sees all this, and is taking steps not to follow us down our path to oblivion.

Much of what is going on in the US right now was dreamt up in the KGB.

Destruction of moral fabric was their long-term strategy for a long time.
