I’d predict that the chances are at least 50/50 that he’s right.
The conventional wisdom is that the party of the president always loses seats in the midterm elections. But the concept of “conventional wisdom” is based upon a “foundation of assumptions” that is literally shifting beneath us.
Remember last October, when every pundit on Fox News was touting how no president with an economic record as bad as Obama’s had ever been re-elected? Well, what happened next?
The Republicans did pretty well in 2010, but things have changed even in two short years. The Pubbies were blunderbussed this past election, and during the time since have shown little to demonstrate that they’ve recovered or learned anything from the experience. Indeed, they seem to be in a “rush to the left” in a frantic attempt to prove (only to themselves) that they remain relevant as a national party.
Whether that is true, we’ll find out in two more years...
