A Tierrasanta teacher arrested for having a loaded gun on campus once told students that he had the gun to protect the school according to one student.

Farb Middle School teacher Ned Walker, 41, was arrested Monday in the school's parking lot for having a .380 loaded semi-automatic handgun with a 7-round magazine as well as a 2.5 inch locking blade knife in his car.

After the school's staff told the vice principal that Walker may be storing ammunition on campus, she contacted school police, according to district spokesperson Jack Brandais.

“A search of the two cabinets revealed no ammunition or weapons however during a search of the parking lot and the suspect’s car in the parking lot it was determined he was in possession of a loaded firearm,” said San Diego Unified District Chief of Police Rueben Littlejohn.

When he was first questioned by police, Walker denied possessing the gun officials said.

A group of Ned Walker's former students said they knew the teacher had a weapon.

Walker’s former student Astin Martin told NBC 7 San Diego, "We all knew. We all knew that he had a gun.”

“He just said it was for protection for us. We didn't really think he'd doing anything with it, he's a good teacher," Martin said.

When asked how it became common knowledge on campus, Martin said Walker revealed that he had the gun to his students at the beginning of the year.

“'I just have it for protection reasons in case something happened at the school,'” Astin recalled the teacher telling the class. “And we're like 'oh [ok]', and he's like 'yeah', and it was just pretty much, we knew about it."

This comes in the wake of another middle school (Twin Peaks Middle School in Poway), just 15 or so miles north, having made national news after a student threatened to kill a teacher and 23 students yesterday.

The police raided the family's home and took a number of weapons (that were locked up and the student did not have the key to). That student is in custody (well, from what I've heard, now hospitalized)

Here was the earlier FR thread on that situation: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2987400/posts

Tierrasanta is (largely) build on the former Camp Elliott and is just south of Miramar. Unexploded ordinance has been found numerous times over the years, in fact some of my old classmates were killed by a device that was found at the end of my street in the early 80's. That led to what are still done routinely "bomb assemblies" in the Tierrasanta schools. What to do if you find unexploded ordinance, etc. and it wasn't unusual to see the military sweeping the canyons and hillsides several times a year, especially after heavy rainfall, looking for more ordinance.

Part of Tierrasanta is also home to Murphy Canyon, a predominantly military family community - and those students largely go to Farb. It'll be interesting to see what public reaction ends up being to this story as this ends up hitting the news.

Locally, though, everything is getting pre-empted by the Dorner stuff so it may be awhile before there's more real reaction to it.

Bizarrely for me, I moved from Tierrasanta (where Farb Middle School is - this new story with the teacher) to Poway, where then I attended Twin Peaks (the Poway school). Two relatively small, rarely in the news San Diego suburbs both in the news for guns on campus type related stories all in 24 hours. Odd!

Another school left defenseless? I’m beginning to wonder if San Diego (with its commie mayor), isn’t going so far to the Left that it cannot recover.

If you are interested in safe school/home programs, check out the NRA’s “Eddie Eagle” program to promote gun safety.

You’ll be surprised which liberal, wealthy Virginia county is now going to adopt it, thanks to my daughter. Some parents and teachers and administrators actually do care about their students. The opponents will be the leftist liberals crawling out of the woodwork.

However, they are in for a nice surprise. More later.

as well as a 2.5 inch locking blade knife in his car.

I heard that he kept long wooden stakes with tactical graphite cores in his desk drawer too and that he sharpened them with disturbing regularity right in the classroom. These are obvious cop killers and even have a device on the other end, unabashedly called an "eraser"

The police can only protect you and the bodies after a shooting.
And harass you before, for protecting yourself, students, and property.
