Dorner manhunt: Charred human remains found in burned cabin
Los Angeles Times ^ | Feb. 13, 2013 | Andrew Blankstein & others

Charred human remains have been found in the burned cabin where police believe fugitive ex-cop Christopher Dorner was holed up after trading gunfire with law enforcement, authorities said.

If the body is identified to be Dorner’s, the standoff would end a weeklong manhunt for the ex-LAPD officer and Navy Reserve lieutenant who is believed to be responsible for a string of revenge-fueled shootings following his firing by the Los Angeles Police Department several years ago. Four people have died, allegedly at Dorner’s hands.

Agree. That is a worthy discussion to have right now.

It is my understanding that “burner” is slang for tear gas.

Yep. A Flite-Rite in an incendiary device. It burns at up to 1200°C.

I know of at least one police department that is required to have the fire department on standby before they use it.

That it contains teargas provides a legal fig-leaf for the department. The fact that they call it a burner demonstrates that they KNOW it's a fire starter.

So does the requirement that the FD be there.

I don't know if the SBPD uses Flite-Rites or other less dangerous tear gas delivery systems. I do know that they call what they used "burners", and I do know that there was a fire.

I want to apologize to you.

I'm sure you aren't an "idiot." And I am sorry for saying that.

Please accept my heartfelt apology.

I sometimes get emotional and speak before thinking.

That being said, Y you are however emotional and reactionary and you should stay far far away from any kind of position of authority.

They didn't kill him. He committed suicide rather than surrender to the police.

So why burn down the cabin?

The only other choice would be to go in after him and give him a chance to kill some more people. It was a slam dunk in that respect.

He wasn't worth another human's life, that for sure. Mainly my point is that the police be clear and accountable. If they set the fire, say so and describe the intention and plan and the options they felt they had.

I actually think they will do this. I believe it was the LAPD SWAT and the LAPD have indicated they are well aware of their past and desire to show they can be trusted.

Thanks for your post.

(the police) weren't 100% sure that the person in the cabin was in fact Dorner?

Does that matter when the person was shooting at them? Do people normally fire at law enforcement officers?

A cold blooded killer is dead and can't kill anymore, like that young innocent couple he killed.

Bottom line.

Interesting. Just noticed that there is a concentration of bullet holes where the driver’s AND passenger’s head would be. I don’t remember hearing anywhere that Dorner was with an accomplice, please correct me if I am wrong. So, given that you usually shoot AT something, the pattern of bullet holes seems to indicate that the cops were shooting at two individuals.

Again, I just find it interesting that that many “head shots” were fired at a vehicle with two occupants when officers were on the lookout for a vehicle with only one occupant.

Once again, the cops were being shot at. Repeatedly. And from the article I posted, it looks like they shifted to a variety of tear gas that had a higher chance of starting a fire. They were dealing with a guy who stayed in a small cabin after repeated firings of basic tear gas. Not a normal situation.

Their response wasn't emotional, but an effort to end the shootout lest more cops get killed. For most people, it is logical in the face of gunfire from a deranged gunman.

Well said. Due process might have been a rare end event as well but the whole thing went down in about an hour and a half. I heard the whole thing on the scanner yesterday. All of it and I can report to every FReeper that the cops moved to the ‘burn plan’ almost immediately, they deployed the burners and then reported that they had fire. Those are the facts for better or worse.

Did Dorner get what was coming to him? Yes..but if we applaud burning down private property as an ok Plan A and police meting out justice more out of vengeance, then the rule of law, then we will get what we deserve..tyranny.

Next person we watch and hear live on TV and scanners might just be a gun owner that is only refusing to give up his 2A rights or his guns to Obama’s ‘security forces’. When the security forces are burning down his house with him in it, don’t say we did not warn you.

The militarization of our police forces is happening all over the country and if that doesn’t give you at least some level of discomfort with Obama and Holder in charge, then you are not paying attention. And please, spare me the charge that I am a ‘cop hater’! That is a debate tactic of the left. It is ok if you disagree but let’s dispense with the childish name calling.

Bingo.

Sort of like lynch mob justice? Hmmm?

Only it's the cops doing the lynching.

I get it now! Have a badge and a gun and YOU MAKE THE LAWS!

Where do I sign up?!

"something just earlier in the day he had done"

There is informed speculation, and hedging in the press, about whether Dorner shot the last guy or it was cop cross-fire. If a proper investigation is done, we'll find out later.

Dorner did shoot cops. But I don't believe that properly waiting him out must expose cops to more risk today than tomorrow or the next day. Indeed, waiting him out puts him at a lower and lower level of capability; tiredness being operative. Why not wait? Stand Waaaaaay back. Let the dude stew for a week, and blast him with whatever music he hates. Run robots up for a peek-a-boo. Etc.

“I don’t think it’s fair to say Dorner was murdered or that they were even trying to murder him.”

I didn’t say he was murdered. I said if he was deliberately killed it would be murder...

So, imagine you’re one of those vile prepper people.....alone in your mountain cabin, living the peaceful life...not messing with anyone, and no one messing with you...law-abiding...

One day, you have Cops, Drones, news helicopters and God knows what else, shooting, making racket and terrifying you.

Do you come out, all meek and mild?

Or do you hunker down and kick-ass and take down as many as you can, not knowing who, or what, or how many are coming at your pos? Suppose your wife is with you...and your kids...grandkids...dogs...and years & years worth of food & preps.

Going to surrender all that to the first douche-nozzle who fires at you?

I’m 100% sure I would shoot at anyone threatening my family, and I’m 100% sure I would keep shooting until that threat was eliminated or I was. And if you thought about it, I suspect you would too.

It could be simpler than that. It could be they wanted to go home that evening instead of giving Dorner more opportunities to kill some of them. The guy clearly was out-there nuts and dangerous.

It's late in the day, let's just kill him and go home.

Yeah, I know that isn't exactly what you said.

So why burn down the cabin?

They were giving him an incentive to surrender but he still chose to refuse it. He chose to become a marshmallow rather than come out with his hands up.

He wasn't just sitting in the cabin doing nothing but waiting. He was shooting at the cops outside.

That just isn't a very smart thing to do. It is in fact suicidal.

I again refer to the cops almost killing two Asian women throwing deadly newspapers at them.

How do you like your tyranny Joe "dirt?"

I guess you are ok with it so long as you aren't the one being hunted by the cops.
