During Tuesday night's State of the Union address, Barack Obama boasted that he and NATO are planning to leave Afghanistan at the end of 2014 and leave the security of the country to the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).
Theres one problem: the ANSF isnt ready.
The ANSF was supposed to meet determined standards of effectiveness before the U.S. would withdraw its forces, but now the Government Accountability Office (GAO) is admitting that those standards were lowered so that coalition forces could get out.
The desired ranking for the ANSF was previously independent, which meant they could function alone. Those rankings were lowered in August 2011 to independent with advisors, which meant the ANSF needed the coalitions help. Despite the fact that the standards were lowered in November, three months later only 14 percent of ANSF units and 13 percent of police units were able to meet the new standards.
The GAO said in its report that the the Department of Defense acknowledged that the changes to the rating levels, as well as the elimination of certain requirements for validating units, were partly responsible for the increase in ANSF units rated at the highest level.

“.....those standards were lowered...”
Well heck, AA works great in our country, of course we should pass it around.
I knew his 2nd 4 was going to be terrible, it is really hard to watch on some days.
Well, we can pretty much figure that Defense got
pressure to lower the standards to keep in Obama’s
timeline...
The ANSF will never be ready! Why are we there? What is the goal? There is no freakin’ reason to be there without an objective. We still building schools and soccer fields? Whoop-de. This was a mistake from the beginning, and there is no reason to continue getting our guys killed. Bring our troops home now.
We should have bombed the place flat and gone home. Putting troops in Afghanistan was stupid. I hope Wolfowitz, Perle, Cheney, and the others can’t sleep at night.
Regarding the departure of US forces, President Bush always said that when Iraq and Afghanistan could stand up the US would stand down - or words to that effect.
