In 49 BC Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon and launched civil war against Sulla. Sulla's defeat in battle was the fall of the Roman Republic. Has little or nothing to do with what we face today.
Actually Caesar defeated Pompey, of course. Sulla came earlier.
The empire thrived and prospered for centuries after the fall of the republic.
