Father says he's still paying child support for 3-year-old son who died 25 years ago

Campbell says even clerks at the Friend of the Court have been baffled.

"The lady said 'how you owe on a child been dead 23 years?' I said I don’t know and she said we’ll do another audit".

--

Court officials admitted to 7 Action News that the calculations from the audits were wrong and that they would expedite another one.

The latest audit resulted in what court officials believe is an accurate amount Campbell still owes: $6,460.08.

And after so many erroneous audits, Campbell still doubts he owes that amount because for so many years he was paying for what court officials believed were two children.

A spokesperson for Friend of the Court tells 7 Action News that there is no clear reason other than human error to explain why multiple audits generated such varied amounts.

"Campbell drove to Detroit to show court officials a death certificate, proof that Michael died in 1988, but says he was told that he still owed about $43,000 for Michael."

2nd audit said $20,000

3rd audit said $6,460.08

Now they are going to audit it for the 4th time.

They must be using the same accounting practices as Obama uses in DC!

I doubt it. The audits are getting lower.

Maybe they have records showing the child has been voting since he was 18, proof he is not deceased.

“Maybe they have records showing the child has been voting since he was 18, proof he is not deceased.”

Such a statement may sound like a joke to some but there is actually a solid chance that this is what happened. Scary thought :(

Get a lawyer and sue for overpayment. Sure the POS lawyer will get the lion’s share but the nightmare will be over.

Is it possible that the state or some other public agency paid the child support and billed him for it, bills which he ignored? Or does he owe back unpaid child support? If I don't pay a credit card bill on an account that has been closed for 23 years, my liability it does not go to zero. I still owe the money.

Maybe if wasn't a deadbeat, I said maybe, maybe his child would still be alive.

Anyway, I guess he'll win the award as "Father of Year" next year.

Just looked up what “ Friend of the Court” is.

They have the power of enforcement by garnishing wages, suspending drivers license, Passport, etc.

If it were me, I’d take them to court.

"In every bureaucratic system, the shifting of responsibilities is a matter of daily routine,
and if one wishes to define bureaucracy in terms of political science, that is as a form of government - the rule of office as contrasted to the rule of men of one man or of the few, or of the many
bureaucracy unhappily is the rule of nobody and for this reason is perhaps the least human and most cruel form of rulership".

It’s just the dumb@sses at Child Support - they probably ran a computer check, saw this guy stopped paying, and assessed him child support since then.

Good luck getting that straightened out.

The states view that as simply another tax and another source of tax revenue.

There is no upside for a fertile and virile man these days. If I had it all to do over again and were able to do so, I would have had myself vasectomized at puberty.

The friend of the court is seldom a friend of the people. It was their screw up that allowed me to spend a day in jail for non payment of support while they figured out that I didn't have kids. A few years back I was looking at the website for the Jackson county friend of the court and they proudly declared that they collected fines and payments in excess of 100%.

Hannh Arendt?

She was one of the most intelligent people I ever read. And one of the hardest to understand. Primary language barrier with incredibly complex sentence structure.

Her Book: “The Origins of Totalitarianism”, was one of the most difficult reads I ever attempted.

Too few people in the US are familiar with her.
