Moran: The Menendez scandal, broken down
Star Ledger ^ | February 17, 2013 | Tom Moran

Here we go again.

In 2002, Sen. Robert Torricelli quit his re-election campaign after he was caught accepting minor gifts from a shady donor. A promising career crashed in flames.

Now, Sen. Robert Menendez, is on the hot seat for accepting gifts from his own shady donor. Wasn’t he paying attention in 2002? Why would he play such a sloppy game?

“We have to ask this question repeatedly: How can smart people be so stupid?” says Norman Ornstein, an expert on Congress with the American Enterprise Institute. “It happens over and over, so why don’t they see what the consequences are?”

The Menendez scandal is complicated, so here is a cheat sheet:

The bombshell accusation is that the New Jersey Democrat had sex with an underage prostitute in the Dominican Republic during a trip with his donor pal, eye doctor Salomon Melgen.

This one seems like pure slander. There is no credible evidence to support it, even after the FBI and media outlets looked into it. A right-wing blogger was peddling this story in the days before the November election, so it has all the earmarks of a dirty trick.

The gift is a bigger problem. Menendez took two flights to the Dominican Republic on Melgen’s private plane, and somehow he forgot to report that or to reimburse Melgen, as Senate rules require.

This is not a joke. Menendez wants us to believe that it slipped his mind. He finally paid Melgen a $58,500 reimbursement last month — after Republicans flagged the violation

“Wasn’t he paying attention in 2002? Why would he play such a sloppy game?”

Because he was thinking of all the little senoritas that his buddy was setting him up with... not with the welfare of the people of New Jersey. (He was thinking with his “little” head)

1)They’re not nearly so smart as they are arrogant.

2) Character counts and voters have the attitude that they’re not voting for “choir boys”. It’s time we start moving character up the list.

Oh, there’s more to this than him just being lead around by his little head. he is of the genre who believe they are above the law, including God’s laws. These dead souls do not believe even God’s laws apply to their loftiness ... democrips and republicants, America is now sinking to ghetto status with the community organizer failing to provide leadership for a free sovereign people. Instead, the two political gangs plot and carry out greater and greater usurpations, to empower themselves. Democrip Menendez is a symptom of how degenerated this nation has become at the top.

What does character have to do with getting the free government stuff? Character doesn't even enter into the equation when people are promised so much from government.

Since she was under 18, could the prostitute be considered a “minor” gift???

Less than 5% ( my own figure) of these thieves ever get caught.

Does anyone really believe Menendeez is the only one on the Hill doing this?

They are actually taking bvery little chance. They know the ethics committee is a joke, if they actually ever get charged.

These “scandals” are only bothersome to people who respect the Constitution and the law. To DEMOCRAPS, it is merely a resume builder! Harrison Williams, Torch Torricelli, Jim Mc Greevy, Eliot Spitzer, Anthony Weiner, Robert Menendez, et al. Many times, the people get the government that they deserve!

We need to have term limits to protect congress from the harsh realities that they are vulnerable to crime. They have proved it time and time again and there is no one to stop it.

It is no different than limiting salt or how much soft drink you can have.

We have to do it......for the children.
