Investigators recover Lanza computer data

NEWTOWN -- Investigators have succeeded in recovering some data from one of the damaged hard drives in a computer used by Adam Lanza and have subpoenaed computers of people they believe were in contact with the Sandy Hook mass murderer, a law enforcement source said Friday.

Another smashed hard drive is still being reconstructed by technicians with the U.S. Department of Defense, the source said.

Authorities are particularly interested in what relationships Lanza had within the online and video game community, hoping there may be clues about what provoked him to shoot his mother to death, then kill 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School on the morning of Dec. 14.

Earlier in their investigation, State Police found a trove of violent gaming material at the Newtown home Lanza shared with his mother, Nancy.

Lanza attempted to destroy the computer hard drives either on the day of the shootings or shortly earlier.

Investigators also have concluded that Adam Lanza's mother did not restrict his access to the Bushmaster rifle and three other guns he took to Sandy Hook school to embark on his killing spree, according to another law enforcement source familiar with the investigation.

Nancy Lanza "had the means to secure the weapons" inside the Yogananda Street home she shared with her 20-year-old son, but the security measures she employed didn't include keeping them away from Adam, the source said. Nancy Lanza and her son had frequently used area firing ranges.

The mother should not have kept guns in the house and taken this psycho to the range.

This freak of nature was left alone in the dark war gaming 24 hours a day alone and the mother leaves weapons unsecured around?

How can anyone possibly defend that recklessness?

stuck on stupid.

Obvious from your reply.

This thread was about Adam Lanza.

A cold blooded, premeditated murderous POS.

I said that trigger locks or a gun safe would have prevent him from having access to his MOM’S gun

No, you stated, "Here’s a thought...she could have put trigger locks on her weapons and hid the keys. She could have put them in a gun safe and kept the combination to herself.

You can't even recall your own posts. LOL!

No, you [Lee's Ghost] stated, "Here’s a thought...she could have put trigger locks on her weapons and hid the keys. She could have put them in a gun safe and kept the combination to herself.

How is that different than saying, "I said that trigger locks or a gun safe would have prevent him from having access to his MOM’S gun"?

I haven't understood this exchange between you and Lee's Ghost. How can anyone disagree it was foolish of his mother to not secure her weapons so that at least, it would be as difficult as possible for him to get to them?

It seems you are disagreeing with the contention she was a foolish steward of her guns. If so, how? Do you not believe she at least shares some of the responsibility for the tragedy?

How will we ever really know if she had the firearms secured from him or not? Mentally ill people can be very clever and cunning; possibly she did have the weapons secured and he managed to locate keys/combinations. Not sure how law enforcement can ever be sure, she is not alive to question.

I think if she knew he was mentally ill, seems she did- she should have not had firearms in the house. Yet she may have been convinced they were secure from him, until they weren’t.

I feel sorry for her because of the stories that she was attempting to get help for him and it seems to be extremely difficult for families to get help for mentally ill people against their will.

Not sure what to think about her keeping the firearms and not sure how she dealt with that. I did read one news story where the reporter claimed to go to gun ranges and could not find one where she had taken her son to in recent years. Possibly she did take him regularly before he showed serious symptoms of mental illness. Many mental problems seem to appear as a child grows up, not always present.

I haven't understood

How much more simply and plainly can I make it?

Laws, trigger locks and gun safes will NOT prevent a cold blooded, premeditated murderer from violence against innocent defenseless people.

Before I had teenage sons, I would have agreed that playing violent video games might mess with their heads. And cause violence in real life.

I don’t feel that way any more, though. If you asked all of my son’s friends if they play shooter video games, they will say yes. Some more than others, but all do it. They are athletes and good students and most have good families — intact, loving. One or two don’t, but they still seem like good kids.

It might be that asking a teenaged boy who comes into a hospital for suicidal tendencies or depression if he plays video games is like asking him if he ever eats chips.

They have asked the state's attorney's office for an update on the investigation, seeking information not only about the weapons Lanza used but also the state of his mental health.

“They” meaning state lawmakers.

“Cafero said he has given Chief State's Attorney Kevin Kane a list of 10 questions that would aid lawmakers in fashioning proposals, including whether Nancy Lanza used a storage locker or some sort of safe to store her weapons; details on Adam Lanza’s mental health history; whether he attempted to buy guns on his own; and exactly which guns he used in the killings”

“There is a lot of evidence that was recovered, but the question is, what does it tell us?” said one law enforcement source. “This is not a who-done-it

Yep, there are a lot of questions allright. But, if I ask then that makes me a “Conspiracy Theorist”.

But I can say definatly what gun was used to kill “all”, every single one, of the victims. It was the Bushmaster. I know. I have a gen-u-wine e-mail from the Medical Examiner, H.Wayne Carver stating exactly that. So, all you cops, lawmakers and concerned citizens, you don't have to ask that question.
