Resistance Is Not Futile
Weekly Standard ^ | February 2013 | William Kristol

In the states, Republicans are governing successfully. At the think tanks, conservatives are arguing intelligently. Around the country, activists are organizing energetically. All well and good. And important. But not enough...

...resistance in Washington today has to be central to the agenda for a conservative future tomorrow. If Republicans in Congress lack the nerve to stand up to President Obama, or the moxie to do so effectively, all other admirable efforts could end up being for naught...

It’s not a new insight that at times resistance is a necessary prelude to revival and reform. Our British cousins have centuries of experience in the trials and tribulations of self-government...The famous first stanza of “God Save the Queen” is positive and uplifting:

God save our gracious Queen,

Long live our noble Queen,

God save the Queen:

Send her victorious,

Happy and glorious,

Long to reign over us:

God save the Queen.

This is followed by a stanza less often sung but in its own way instructive and energizing:

O Lord, our God, arise,

Scatter her enemies,

And make them fall.

Confound their politics,

Frustrate their knavish tricks,

On thee our hopes we fix:

God save us all.

The British have known for centuries that it’s not enough to hope for happy and glorious days in the future. It’s also necessary, with God’s help, to act in the present to scatter our enemies and make them fall....

Kristol, I think, has realized his "millionaires can pay more" observation was ridiculous. He seems to be on the right track in this column...

I agree, we at the grass roots level can continue to fight AND the people in D.C. need to keep resisting the fascist in the Oval Office.

Wow, I agree with him. Resist we much!

I don’t see anyone in Congressional leadership buying into this philosophy. Wish more Conservatives would start bucking their leadership and follow Bill’s advice here. Could start a movement!

Now how did Romney look? Some of us tried to tell you. Got what many of you wanted and live with it. America is finished.

Resistance Is Not Futile

Explain THAT to the Lindsey Grahams, the John Boehners, the John McCains, etc.

Good luck.

America is finished.

I know you know this...but America is NOT finished.

America is an idea, a symbol...it is the emblem of liberty, freedom, and responsibility of individual men who have gathered together to celebrate their individuality and individual responsibility to such ideals.

It will never die.

Yeah, no need to flog Kristol for past mistakes. He is correct in this piece, so let it be a stand-alone encouragement for everyone.
