Virginia’s Gun Ban Bob McDonnell Strikes Again
Ammo Land ^ | Feb 18, 2013 | AmmoLand Staff

Virginia --(Ammoland.com)- This VGOC action alert contains:

1. An urgent call to Action to Stop Gun Ban Governor Bob McDonnell’s last minute legislative plan to sneak new gun bans past gun owners. Please use the message below to call the Governor as soon as possible.

2. A cut, copy and paste email to be sent to key legislators who can stop Bob McDonnell’s SB 1377 and SB 1378.

Both bills are designed to entrap and severely punish innocent, unsuspecting gun owners in brand new gun crime traps.

3. An urgent request for a donation to your VGOC to help fund the fight to stop this last minute and unexpected assault on our freedoms by Governor McDonnell by clicking STOP GUN BAN BOB.

But first, let me give the facts:

1. Bob McDonnell has a history of banning guns and then flip-flopping when it is politically convenient.

Gun owners nicknamed him Gun Ban Bob over 10 years ago because he voted for liberal Democrat Governor Doug Wilder’s one gun-a-month gun rationing scheme.

Gun Ban Bob then voted again not to repeal it. McDonnell then voted for the ban on concealed carry in restaurants. And to add insult to injury, Gun Ban Bob even voted against the hunting and fishing amendment.

However, when it is politically convenient Bob McDonnell has flip flopped. As Governor, Gun Ban Bob has signed bills reversing his past gun control record. Repealing the dangerous ban on self defense in restaurants is just one example.

2. But now Bob McDonnell is up to his old gun ban tricks.

That’s right!

Gun Ban Bob just dumped several bills into the legislature using the Governor’s privilege to introduce a bill any time he wants provided he can find a bill sponsor.

Both bills are touted as “public safety” bills but in reality they DON’T DO ONE $%#^&$ (excuse my french but this makes me mad) thing to protect innocent children from being slaughtered in Bob McDonnell’s Criminal Safe Zones – - public and private schools.

You live in TN yet are concerned about VA? Also you registered a little more than a month ago.

Excuse me if I’m a little leery of your concern.

What’s wrong with that?

I live in Idaho. I’m concerned about what has happened in New York, Kalifornia, Minnesota, etc.

Whenever the Constitutional rights of American citizens are under assault I am concerned. I don’t care which state thay live in.

Why not do something productive like ping a list of VA Freepers to the thread.

First Bill:

If you think that the gun you gave someone was going to be used in a crime or was used in a crime, it’s a year in jail.

Next bill

If you carry concealed and “intend to commit a felony” then it’s a felony.

Yep, I live in TN and I am concerned about any and all actions anyone takes to limit the 2nd Amendment. What laws that pass in VA may just affect TN (our Gov. is not so much a pro 2nd Amendment type)

Sorry if I steped on any toes, and I am a “new man on the block” but I think my Heart is in the right place.

What say you?

For some reason the elected never put such ideas as this to a public vote at election time. Why is that?

It appears that the “blast” from the VA Gun Owners Coalition was addressed last week in an E-mail Alert from VCDL. Nothing to panic about. McDonnell hasn’t thrown us under the bus.

This following is from a VA Citizen’s Defense League (VCDL) E-Mail Alert I received on 2/13/13. It’s not in their archives yet - http://www.vcdl.org/va-alert-archive.

VA-ALERT: SB 1377 and 1378 NOT a big deal, but REAL change is needed!

I was hoping not to have to get into this, but I’m getting too many people asking about SB 1377 and SB 1378 from another organization’s email blast.

VCDL is not thrilled with either bill, but we are not reading those bills the same way as the other organization. We are NEUTRAL on both bills.

The other organization’s blast alleges:

SB 1377 turns you into a criminal for defending yourself at a college or university. Under this bill, any law-abiding adult who defends herself on campus would almost certainly face a class 3 felony charge, EVEN in a clear-cut self-defense case.

VCDL’s analysis:

SB 1377 makes a new penalty for someone who is carrying a gun on school property with the INTENT of committing a VIOLENT FELONY, such as murder, rape, robbery, etc. Self-defense, ESPECIALLY a clear-cut case, would NOT constitute a violent felony and would not fall under this bill.

The other organization’s blast alleges:

SB 1378 increases the potential criminal penalties for buying and transferring guns; meaning that law-abiding Virginians could be slapped under a microscope, locked up for 10 years and fined up to $100,000, for virtually any non-government sanctioned firearms sale.

VCDL’s analysis:

SB 1378 increases the penalty for someone KNOWINGLY performing a straw purchase. This includes the criminal who is using the straw purchase to get a gun and the person with a clean background who is KNOWINGLY doing the purchase so the gun can be turned over to the criminal.

You can read the bills yourself. Here are links to them WITH YELLOW HIGHLIGHTING so you can easily see what is being changed by the bills to the current law. You can then make up your own mind:

http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?131+ful+SB1377+hil

http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?131+ful+SB1378+hil

It’s a real disappointment that the Governor’s Task Force on School Safety came up with these two bills to improve the safety of our school children.

Neither bill will do anything to make our schools safer. In fact, SB 1378 has nothing to do with schools at all. These two bills are really nothing more than political window dressing designed to make it *appear* that the government is doing something to make our schools safer when in reality it is doing nothing of the sort.

If the Governor was truly serious about making our schools safer, he’d have a bill introduced to get rid of the dangerous “gun free zone” around our schools that make them soft targets for criminals, the deranged, and terrorists.

Governor McDonnell, we want REAL safety for our children, not phony political theatrics! Repeal the school ban!

Well, I have to say that the VA Citizen’s Defense League can’t be much of a pro second amendment org if they are neutral on these bills. They are both fraught with danger for law abiding CCW carriers. All gun bills at this time should be opposed by all second amendment orgs. Yours sounds like a bunch of enablers.

I guess you have to pick your battles.

VCDL has been around for a long time doing a lot of hard work to hold back the attacks of the gun grabbers. I trust them and respect their judgment. They are the chief defender of gun rights in Virginia, IMHO!

As am I, for some 10 years. I know of the battles that the VCDL has fought and won for us. Outsiders should investigate before they condemn.
