[A big thanks to everyone who sent emails, called, faxed, and attended the hearing.]
A bill calling for banning assault weapons in New Mexico was tabled in committee Thursday night (Feb. 21) when Democrat and chairman of Consumer and Public Affairs sided with Republicans in a 3-2 vote.
“I don’t think this is the time for this legislation right now,” Rep. Eliseo Lee Alcon, D-Milan. “I think something is going to be done on the federal level” since President Obama’s administration is advocating for gun control measures.
House Bill 402 was sponsored by Rep. Stephen Easley, D-Santa Fe, and would have made it illegal to own “an assault weapon or a large-capacity ammunition feeding device” unless the person owned the weapon before July of this year, was a law enforcement officer, was an active member of the military or would use the weapon only at gun range.
After the tabling motion, Rep. Easley said of Alcon’s vote, “”He and I disagree on that because we don’t know what’s going to happen on the federal level … There’s always next year.”
Easley has another gun control bill in the hopper — House Bill 578 that would ban most people from carrying firearms at the Roundhouse.
Last week, a bill calling for background checks at gun shows passed the House floor with bi-partisan support. House Bill 77, sponsored by Rep. Miguel Garcia, D-Albuquerque, is now in the Senate and Gov. Susana Martinez has said she’d sign it if the bill remains in its current form because it establishes a procedure to align the states mental health and criminal conviction records with the federal instant background check system.
IT IS NOT AN “ASSAULT WEAPON”! IT IS A DEFENSE WEAPON AGAINST TYRANNICAL GOVERNMENT
I was under the impression that NM was a gun-friendly state.
I traveled through one time and people had pistols openly caried on their hips.
Although HB 402 has been tabled, HB 77 is still moving forward. Governor Martinez needs to hear very clearly resounding opposition to HB 77. Her office can be reached at 575-476-2200.
All the Santa Fe Dems are extreme libs - big-government, anti-gun, eco-nuts.
The Dems in out-lying areas still tend to be more sensible.
Translation: Elections look scary in 2014.
Yes Joe. I can use a shotgun to protect myself and my family and truth be known, I have PLENTY of them. (Though I don’t fire them willynilly at sounds in the shrubbery).
But military arms like ARs, AKs, FAL FNs. M1As. M1s. Uzis. Mac10s (fill in your favorite). are real good for keeping TYRANTS at bay (as are shotguns).
God Bless the American Patriot. Joe? You haven’t a clue.
If you drive the Rio Grande corridor from Las Cruces to Santa Fe, you are in the socialist state of NM. Unfortunately, that is also where the majority of the population lives. There are a lot of good conservative folks living in the Rio Grande corridor but they are just like the rest of us in the rural areas: outnumbered.
Gov. Martinez needs to be careful about signing HB 77. She will lose a lot of support in 2014.
DWI is a bigger problem in NM. It is a cultural thing to drink and drive yet the legislators don’t do enough to combat this because so many of them also have DWI on their record!
Darn! I need to correct the number I gave... The correct number to the Gov’s office is 505-476-2200
