The Big Con

Please listen up. We are all being conned by the Obama administration. This year, the American taxpayer will fork over about $571 billion to pay for educating children in the nation's public schools. All told, the country spends close to $16,000 per student every year on primary through college education. That's the highest per-student spending rate in the world.

However, according to President Obama, it's not enough. He wants more tax dollars, especially for "early education." He said so in his State of the Union address, and it drew big-time applause from his crew. Of course we need to spend more on education. And anyone who opposes that hates kids!

The centerpiece of the president's early-education vision is the "Head Start" program, which has been in place since 1965. Over the past 48 years, the feds have spent close to $200 billion on Head Start. But there's one big problem: The program is not working.

According to a recent study by the Department of Health and Human Services, by the end of third grade, Head Start children remain academically disadvantaged compared to their same-age peers. So why did the president not mention that? Why is he still pounding the drum for more funding for a program that is not cutting it?

The answer is social engineering.

Obama will not say this, but one of his devoted followers, Columbia University professor Joseph Stiglitz, will. What the left really wants is to redistribute income through the public education system.

In a recent New York Times column, Stiglitz called for the following:

--More spending on preschool education.

--More spending on before- and after-class programs.

--More entitlements to ensure that pregnant women are protected from "environmental hazards." That means increased payments to prospective moms for better food, housing and medical care.

And the topper:

--Direct cash payments to parents of poor children who make sure their kids participate in school programs and show up for class. If that ever comes to be, America essentially will be paying parents to parent.

It is all about control. Obama believes the deck in America is stacked against the poor and wants to get lower-income citizens as much cash and as many entitlements as he can. Masking those payments under "more money for education" is a clever way to do that.

It is certainly true that poor children have a much tougher academic road than affluent kids. And smart educational policy can close that gap. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush told me the reason Head Start is not delivering is that it doesn't concentrate enough on reading. In many school districts, it is primarily a babysitting service.

As a former high school teacher and a student in a class of 60 urchins at St. Brigid's grammar school, I know that education is all about discipline and motivation. Disadvantaged students need extra attention, a stable school environment and enough teacher creativity to stimulate their imaginations. Those things are not expensive.

But that's not all of what federal education spending is about, is it? It's also about redistributing income. We are being conned big time. And it's the kids who suffer the most because of it.

The only purpose of “pubic” education today is to turn all young skulls full of mush into patriots of Karl Marx.

I consider it child abuse to send a child to a public school.
If one can not afford a decent private school, home schooling should be the only option.

Didn’t mention that ‘public education’ is money laundering scheme for dems. How much of that 16,000 per student is fed back to dems directly to pockets and indirectly to campaigns via unions?

This is the whole point of Obamacare to unionize the healthcare industry which will generate big bucks back to the dems.

IMHO, utter disgust with public alternatives and technology will create more homeschooling, and even ‘micro’ schools.

One classroom school houses at churches and private homes that use online learning with part time onsite teachers, tutors, and volunteers.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Don’t hold your breath waiting for churches to step up an do their Christian duty. Why?

Answer: MONEY! Few ministers are willing to bite the hand putting money in the collection plate.

Think of the people sitting in the pews. In my county ( and likely most) the government school district is the largest single employer, with the most employees, and largest payroll in the county. Then think of the vendors and their employees who sell services to the education-industrial complex.

By the way,....I wonder how many ministers have spouses that work in the government schools? That would be an interesting statistic to know.

You may know what is going on but have you visited the education threads here on Free Republic recently? It is very discouraging to see posts from so-called “conservatives” defending this **CORRUPT** system of godless, compulsory, and socialist-entitlement K-12 schooling. It is amazing to see conservatives insisting that this socialist-entitlement system of schooling can be reformed, or that their child's school is “different”.

Personally, I have made a decision. The nation's system of GODLESS, socialist-entitlement, and prison-like schools are so evil for the child and such a threat to our nation's continuing freedom, that I will NOT have a government school worker for a friend. They are too evil, too stupid, or too much of a Useful Idiot to be a friend. ( I don't have abortion workers for friends, either.)

Reads much better, more truthfully.

Dear Bill. Half the country already knows, and the other half doesn't care. Spare us.

NO they are NOT!

They know EXACTLY what they are doing; for their vote has been BOUGHT with OUR money!

The question is now:

Will we allow the system to collapse; or will we DEMAND (and insure) that it is brought back under control?

In the words of Rand Paul Balderdash, the problem in the inner city is the culture and ATTITUDE,I want black history,my people were slaves, this is the White man’s school, give me my public housing, food stamps, phones and more than anything else, don’t disrespect me,you have 70 percent illegitimate birth rate in the black community and they want birth control pills for 13 year olds and you tell me the problem is reading?
My daughter has been a teacher in the inner city for 11 years,100 percent minority students, the stories she recounts are horrifying. She gets students into her 6th grade class that can only read at the 3rd grade level and can’t do simple number facts. She gets kids that have psychological problems that their parents don’t give them their medication because they are selling their pills, then they go off in class, she has been threatened teachers have been assaulted.
All they talk about is more government programs and you get blowhards like Reilly who all of a sudden after years, realizes what millions have know all all along, that Obama is nothing but a low life, lying cheap thug who has been elected to the highest office in the land by a bunch of useful idiots.

“...and can’t do simple number facts.”

Memorization of number facts were taken out of the schools about the same time The Lord’s Prayer was removed. The claim was that minorities could not memorize as well as whites, and therefore to require memorization was discriminating. This was ALL a lie. I taught 4th grade in an all-black school in Louisiana. Every one of my students memorized their multiplication facts from 1 x 0 to 12 x 12. They had no problem with the assignments. They recited one table a day to me. That got an extra 100% added into their math average for each times table. I knew they would not be able to do fractions or solve algebra equations without an immediate knowledge of their math facts.

The true reason students do not learn their math facts today is that today’s elementary teachers do not realize how much their students are going to need this knowledge later on in higher math.

I was teaching in this classroom when Reagan was elected. One little girl cried in class over the election results. I asked her why she cried about it. She said, “He won’t make us any more money.”

‘”It’s a simple thesis and no one wants to hear it: hipsters may lack drive, but the world they live in wasn’t set up by them, it was set up by their parents, i.e. the Dumbest Generation Of Narcissists In The History Of The World, the ones who magnified the importance and cost of college without having any idea of what should be its purpose, let alone its content.”

“Imagine a large corporate machine mobilized to get you to buy something you don’t need at a tremendously inflated cost, complete with advertising, marketing, and branding that says you’re not hip if you don’t have one, but when you get one you discover it’s of poor quality and obsolete in ten months. That’s a BA.”

We are being conned big time.

Yes, we are Bill. Conned into debt slavery and turning our children over to indoctrination camps. We also pay, or go into debt paying our indoctrinators.

"Everything about socialism is sham and affectation." - 23.11 Ch23 Evil; Economic Harmonies; Frederic Bastiat 1801-1850

All the system had to do, starting around 1965, is not incentivize this madness. If there were not guaranteed student loans, up to any amount, available equally across majors and across colleges, independent of skills or promise or societal need, none of this would have happened. Easy money got us into this mess, and easy money will keep us sailing until we go right off the edge of the map.
