RALEIGH, N.C. (CBS Charlotte) - Officials with both the North Carolina Division of Public Health and the Wildlife Commission are urging hunters to be wary about rabbit fever after two hunters contracted it this month.

I’m surprised that hunters don’t all know about Rabbit fever. I remember back in the 50s when we hunted Rabbits, we never touched them with our bare hands. We gutted and skinned them with gloves on and washed the meat. Then we cooked them and ate them. If it hadn’t been for Rabbits I would have been hungry a lot more often. Think surviving through the great Depression and WWII.

Rabbit fever or Tularemia has a long history as a weaponized bio weapon. The Japanese, Unit 731, and the Soviets conducted research in WII. The U.S. did work with it at Ft Dettrick MD as well as testing aerosol applications on monkeys in the Pacific.

My Dad didn't back in the '40s when he hunted and skinned Idaho jackrabbits for making fur-lined gloves for the Army. He contracted Tularemia and nearly died from it. It's no joking matter.
