I believe, for the UK, "Asian" means Middle East and Indian subcontinent. "Oriental" means China, Japan, Korean, etc.

In the US, "Oriental" is considered somewhat offensive. Just like Paki is in the UK.

I have been informed by Americans of Asian decent that the word Oriental is offensive to them. The say that carpets are oriental and they are Asian.

Hard to keep up with the lingo these days.
