Some women leaving the gun at home for a can of bug spray

ST. LOUIS (WFIE) -

Some women in St. Louis are ready to take aim and fire if confronted by an attacker, but their weapon of choice isn't a gun.

Instead, they're turning to a common household product to protect themselves.

It's barely seven bucks, but it makes Joy Gridnick Christensen feel a whole lot safer.

"And we keep it right here so if you came to the counter with the cash register I would just get this on you and zap you right in the face," said Christensen.

As owner of the Fountain on Locust, she's armed all her employees with wasp spray in case of an attacker and she's not the only St. Louisan using this self defense tactic.

South County resident Carol Dickinson hasn't left home without it since buying a can about a month ago.

"I keep a can of wasp spray in my car in the console where the cup holder is," said Dickinson.

Her friend sent her an email suggesting she try it.

"I can't shoot a gun but I can shoot wasp spray," said Dickinson. "

"Having a gun makes you have to have all sorts of other responsibilities," says Christensen.

And these women say it's how the spray shoots that appeals to them.

I hope this woman never has to find out that she is arming herself for a gunfight with a knife.

Why not buy good quality pepper spray. Works well, designed for self defense.

Not as well. Nerve gas was developed from bug spray.

You have to suspect it works when the first words out of the government are “you can’t do that!”

For a lot of people who lack the willingness to train with a gun, this isn’t the worst alternative, unless you work for the government...;

The Second Amendment says “bear arms” not just guns and in it’s original intent included cannon and other destructive devices.

Tammy8 ~ Pepper spray is illegal in many states.

And where our "betters" will deign to let a peon own it, there are licensing and permitting requirements.

The improved version is amazing: wasps spray and a BIC lighter. No the can will not explode. Use the “shoots a 20 for stream” kind.

Amazing results.

I wonder what Freud would make of that?

From the article:

“Officials at the St. Louis County Police Department responded to the story saying it’s better to use items for their intended purpose and added it’s against federal law to use wasp spray for purposes other than what’s listed on the can.”

Can you believe that?? So, I’m being attacked and use wasp spray and the attacker leaves me alone, but a FEDERAL officer arrests me and sends me to Federal Jail. Good Grief! I live in Texas and they don’t care if I kill the sucker any way I want. Screw the Feds.

My imagination has me picturing the prep....rolling and the floor laughing...while the victim is coughing and rubbing their eyes.

Maybe the perp is supposed to die laughing.

I agree, I am not against guns but I’m against guns for myself because I am a klutz and I’d shoot myself or some innocent bystander. I don’t care how much I trained.

I’d rather have a tazer or chile spray.

Women just don’t understand that if an angry man can get his hands on them, they are dead.

I ran into a 15 year old girl who told me she hitchhiked, when I tried to tell her the dangers she showed me her Buck pocket knife and said that she would stab a bad guy driver in the thigh, in her mind, tough men just stop when injured and in a rage.

I told her that a tough guy would merely grab the back of her head and beat it into the dashboard until she was dead or unconscious, then he would calmly pull over and deal with his wound, and then deal with her.

Bug spray is better than nothing, and will stop some mild mannered robbers, but it is sooooooo far from being an effective weapon.

The key is to assert that you didn’t plan/intend to misuse the product, only in panic you grabbed the closest thing to hand...

(And you only had it close by because you are deathly afraid of/allergic to wasps!)
