Having grown up in the East Texas oil patch and experiencing several Boom/Bust cycles, I can sympathize with them.
Best thing to do is take the money and buy a nice place somewhere pretty where there ain’t no oil and gas (yet). And damn near anywhere is prettier than Karnes County, even before the Shale Boom.
