I’m from NW Oklahoma. I know what that West Texas wind can feel like. Both comin’...and goin’...
I was going to reply last night, but got sidetracked. We lost a few limbs and the neighbor’s weather station showed 44 mph gusts here on Lake Travis.
They are going to need a fleet of helicopters going forward. Probably starting in 2 winters.
Thought I heard that trumpet noise once, but a friend explained what I might have heard instead. Was driving on I 40 late at night through eastern Arizona. The outside temperature was too low for me to stop and find a motel, due to reasons that are best left unexplained. At any rate, there seemed to be no motels or hotels in that area east of Flagstaff anyway. Ended up in that situation due to I 20 being closed from a West Texas wildfire.
So I ended up stopping at a Truck Stop Complex and just resting in the van over night. Got some rest. The weird thing was when I awoke there was a strange sound similar to the trumpet sound and the ground seemed to be oscillating with the sound. And I remembered hearing that all night long as a background noise. Kinda freaked me out. Later on my truck driving friend explained what might have happened. He pointed out that there could have been some strange oscillation between the nearby trucks running or idling. That did make sense, but I was really spooked out for awhile especially when I found out the Truck Stop was at an Indian reservation. That noise kinda sounded like pow wow music and the ground was vibrating with the sound.
Just thought I would share that with you as there are many alternative explanations to the strange trumpet like sounds.
Not as musical as the YouTube recordings on the subject, but the vibration transmitted was marked and unmistakeable, felt like it went right through you...although tbe volume of the sound rose and fell, tbe vibration was constant.
Given our freak wings and waterspouts that day, it seemed like a hypervelocity "river of wind" was overhead, and the friction with tbe more stable atmosphere made the bizarre sounds and vibrations...my theory, anyway.
“freak winds” not “freak wings” lol
Interesting. Where abouts in North Florida are you ? Panhandle ? Western end ? Eastern end ?
North Jax, on the St. John’s river.
So the upper winds were a strong south to north flow out in front of the low pressure system. The winds would have paralleled the Atlantic coastline there. Not a normal situation. Wonder if the jet stream was near your area then ? Perhaps it got a little low in altitude ?
Beyond my job description, and strictly a matter of perception, but it seemed like a narrow “band” overhead going east/west at low elevation was the source, later gaining in elevation and shifting northward. Felt like a narrow river of force or wind was the source of sound/vibration, not just widespread all across the sky.
This was very loud, and while we had hi velocity wind gusts during the day, at this time of night wind speed was 10-15mph on the ground. Sounded like a giant prop plane with a pipe organ aboard was suspended in the sky, very loud and with a vibration that made your teeth feel like they were rattling. Undulating st first, then after it shifted and seemed to gain altitude it got intermittent, but the vibration continued even during the periods of near silence. I’m a sailor, experienced all kinds of wind and weather, but this was a new one.
Almost reads as if you are describing the train noise that a Tornado can make, but at a less intense scale. Maybe you did have some rotating clouds over head, but they were rotating in the horizontal plane. How long did the sound last ?
About three hours my guess. I took note they ended 11pm but not exactly when they started.
