Years ago, when I was living in New Orleans, there was a crime spree where the criminals would go after women who were at red lights. The criminals chose women who were alone in their cars and were blocked from escape by cars that surrounded them at the light.

What would happen is that the criminal would throw a brick through the passenger window and grab the handbag that was usually laying in the passenger seat.

These crimes went on for a while until one criminal chose the wrong victim - an off duty police officer. When the criminal broke the window and tried to reach for the handbag, the police officer grabbed her gun and shot him dead.

That was the last time this type of crime occurred.
