SANTA CRUZ -- Two Santa Cruz police officers and one suspect are dead after a shootout in Santa Cruz Tuesday afternoon, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Phil Wowak said.
Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Vogel said, "Our department is in mourning. This is a horrific day. We lost two exceptionally fine officers today."
Santa Cruz has never lost an officer in the line of duty.
"It's a horrible, horrible day for the Santa Cruz Police Department and the community of Santa Cruz," Vogel said.
"We need to figure out a way to bring out department together as we work through this," Vogel said.
Wowak said the Sheriff's Office will take over patrol operations for the Police Department for the time being.
"My heart goes out to those who were involved," Wowak said.

I appreciate your comments except.... We need to not fall into the trap of referring to the current president’s administration as his “rule.” It is what he would want and what he frequently receives. For now, while this is still The United States of America, our constitution, although battered, still does not allow for “rule” by the president. He is not a ruler although he acts as one.
Yes, they were wearing vests, made out of crocheted hemp.

SANTA CRUZ — Adam Baker, the newest community service officer at the Santa Cruz Police Department, has dreamed of becoming a police officer for years.
The 18-year-old’s aspiration shouldn’t come as a surprise. His dad is longtime Santa Cruz cop Loran “Butch” Baker, he has lived down the block from retired Santa Cruz Police Chief Howard Skerry for years and he spent his childhood hearing stories about his dad’s cases.
Sucks. Just sucks.
