Greek children's charity group Child's Smile (Hamogelo tou Pediou) on Wednesday said that the number of cases it had to take on in 2012 rose by 80 percent compared to the previous year to 41,890 children.
In its annual report, the non-profit group said that 161 children were reported to the organization as being in a state of imminent danger, requiring the intervention of a prosecutor, and 837 were being abused by family members and had to be removed from their homes and placed with child care services.
The report also said that Child's Smile dealt with 127 cases of missing children and took in 325 children who had been abandoned. It also said that its 1056 hotline received 266,000 calls in 2012 from people seeking advice or immediate assistance.
More consequences of the rotten demise of the Welfare State. The state destroys the family by inserting itself as the protector of children, then when the unsustainable Welfare State collapses, you have no sense of family among the population so you get abandonment and child abuse. The Welfare State truly is evil. And we aer about a decade or two behind Greece and we are not changing course.
