I think we should be looking and we should take action.
- Nobody calls weather forecasts stupid.
- Nobody says taking action when tornadoes are near is stupid.
- Smart people on the coast take precautions when Hurricanes approach.
So why not a warning system and precautions for asteroids. Until Feb 15th, I thought the likelihood of an asteroid impact was so small that it was basically movie fodder. But suddenly we've got 1500 injured Russians who prove that the risk is real. Together with Tunguska, that's 2 asteroids just a century apart.

We are in the position of a man stranded on a desert Island under a coconut tree. Either we can wait and eventually get beaned by a falling coconut, or we can go up and get them. Currently there are two private companies,
Planetary Resources and
Deep Space Industries, neither of which have government contracts, are aiming to seek out and mine these bodies. If we can successfully mine these objects, we would have a limitless supply of raw materials and limitless space in which to use them.
