A House committee on Wednesday passed a gun rights bill after removing for now a provision barring doctors from asking patients about gun ownership.
House Bill 2199, dubbed the "Second Amendment Protection Act" by supporters, mainly focuses on prohibiting the federal government from regulating guns manufactured and sold within the boundaries of Kansas. But a secondary provision that would have made it illegal for any doctor other than a psychiatrist to ask about gun ownership threatened to hold it up.

A Kansas gun bill is working its way through the legislature, which essentially guarantees that a gun manufactured in Kansas can always be sold in Kansas with no federal intervention.
The bad news is the clause keeping doctors from asking about gun use was taken out. But, it does make very clear that doctor groups (such as the Kansas Medical Society) stand on the wrong side of the issue.
That’s all right, one of us lies to the doctor about every other visit anyway, so what’s one more?
I don’t have a problem with this, as I think the doctor provisions are pointless, and not at all conservative. I see no reason for the state to govern what a doctor can or cannot say to a patient (or vice versa). Don’t like the question? Refuse to answer and/or find a new doctor. That’s how a free market should work.
What if the doctor was required to ask the question?
Many of the international studies that rank the US so low in quality of healthcare use gun ownership as a big negative metric.
Now since the supremes have ruled that the government can dictate our healthcare needs to us....is it a big stretch to think that guns could be grabbed ‘for our health’?
But I do understand your sentiment - if a psychiatrist really wants to know, and thinks the question is genuinely important, he should be able to ask it.
Just like anti-gun legislation, this pro-gun legislation was hastily put together, and the doctor/gun issue was clumsily put in there.
Yet another way for the fascists to break families and rob them by finding and talking to the weakest member of each family.
Do you want someone grilling your little kids about what you have in your closet?
