Edward Flynn makes spirited call for assault weapons ban (barf alert)

Washington, D.C. - Invoking both the Newtown school massacre and chronic gun violence in American cities, Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn urged Congress Wednesday to ban sales of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines to civilians.

"I've wondered frequently in the past decade how many people have to get murdered in a mass murder for it to be enough," Flynn said. "Is 20 babies enough to say these implements should not be so easily distributed?"

Flynn was one of several witnesses at an emotional Senate Judiciary hearing on the "Assault Weapons Ban of 2013," a bill introduced in the aftermath of the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., in December.

Neil Heslin, the father of one of the children murdered in Newtown, cried as he testified.

"I'm not here for the sympathy or the pat on the back," Heslin, a 50-year-old construction worker, told the senators. "I'm here to speak up for my son."

Other relatives of Newtown victims were in the audience.

Flynn was there as a law enforcement figure who supports the legislation. And he made for a spirited, outspoken witness, interrupting Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina to challenge his arguments against the bill and drawing applause more than once from members of the audience who support new gun restrictions. After his testimony, he was even more pointed on the issue in an interview with the Journal Sentinel.

I've wondered frequently how much farther down the road to a progressive police state we'd be were it not for Second Amendment gun ownership.

“...Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn urged Congress Wednesday to ban sales of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines to civilians.”

Despite the Police chief wearing a ridiculous uniform designed to make him look like a four star general, someone should remind him that police officers ARE CIVILIANS. If I cant have a standard capacity mag, then neither should they. He talks about an arms race, but cops have partners, backups, swat teams, armored vehicles and helicopters. I have none of that. If I dont need semi autos, neither do they.

Does Milwaukee have a swat team that uses semi-automatic rifles with more than 10 round magazines?

If so, will he discard them—or say they are needed for defense against bad men with guns.

Is 20 babies enough to say these implements should not be so easily distributed?

Are 79 Branch Davidians enough to say that the government is out of control?

How about 1.2 million fetuses a year? Just because these fetuses have aged, why put so much additional value to them?

And then let's look to another issue. Semiautomatic rifles account for fewer than 3% of deaths. Most gun related deaths are by handgun. If I were a criminal with the intent to commit a crime, my primary weapon would be a revolver. That way no shells are left at the scene. And since these weapons are not covered by current proposed laws, they'll be next if the ridiculous and already proven to be a failure assault weapons ban is passed. Make all guns illegal and a black market in guns will rise. And who buys on the black market? Criminals. So the net result is only to prevent the honest person from having the ability to defend himself. Taking this a step further, citizens need the ability to resist an oppressive government. Our “Founding Fathers” foresaw this need and it should be preserved.

Years ago —I’m talkin’ three decades plus ago— I converted my Norinco SKS to use detachable mags, so I gave away the twenty round box mag I removed from it. I’ve since sold the rifle, which had a folding pistol-grip stock put on it. Out of curiosity I have tried to locate a twenty round box, thinking I would rather have the stripper clip reloading option if I ever obtain another SKS. The things no longer exist in this universe!

Just for your information, I bought a Glock 22 at a gun show a couple of years ago that was a trade in by the Milwaukee police department. It showed holster wear, but had not been shot enough to even make ‘ring marks’ on the barrel or a bullet ‘seat’ on the bolt/slide face where the firing pin projects. It might be that a 40 S&W round is too powerful for the Milwaukee police ... so why is this idiot chief making such a fool of himself and the department?

“so why is this idiot chief making such a fool of himself and the department?”

Police chiefs are politicians first and cops second. To make police chief in any major city requires that you be actively anti-gun. Regarding your glock I bought a similar police trade in a few years ago. Lots of holster wear but not much use. Works fine.

"Is 20 babies enough to say these implements should not be so easily distributed?"

Are millions of babies enough to say that abortions should not be so easily obtained?

Most of them come with a ten rd. box mag. You had the Red Star 20 rd. mag? I have tried to find those for sale too but it's difficult. I have read on several gun blogs/forums that the Red Star mags don't work very well.

Two friends of mine, both Marine Corps Vietnam vets, told me they thought the ten rd. box mags fed by stripper clips would work as well or better in a battle situation. I have the original stock, box mag and lots of stripper clips so my choices are wide open.

And what do criminals buy on the black market? Full auto.
