Rousseff stressed Brazil was committed to peace but also needed its defense deterrent, as she inaugurated a naval shipyard in Rio de Janeiro state where the country's first nuclear-powered sub is set to be built in partnership with France.

Brazil has always wanted a nuclear weapon despite public claims. I believe if they have not already got one, they are pretty close.

“select group of countries that have nuclear-powered submarines”

Free Republic should have it’s own nuclear powered submarine.

“Who is a threat to Brazil? Argentina? Venezuela?”

If North Korea or Iran launches a successful EMP attack and wipes out the US, the rest of the world could get very interesting.

As far as brazil is concerned, the United States of America. It fancies itself a world power, and the numbers seem to indicate the brazilians may be on to something.

“Imagine the quarterly FReepathons.... “

That’s what I was thinking also. My daughter is a nuclear engineer, she could help with maintenance. That would help some on the costs.

I could paint if needed....

Huh? An EMP cannot “wipe out” the US. Damage power lines? Sure. But you’ve been watching a few too many movies.

Agreed.

Are you starting the Free Republic sub-athon? Wonder how much it would cost to buy one from the Russians...

Well, based on what I know of nuclear subs - which is precious little - this sounds more like a “bragging rights” project for Brazil than maybe the best military policy.

If their objective is coastal defense and to protect their oil rigs, I would think purchasing late model diesel-electric boats would be a sounder policy. You don’t need the around-the-world range of a nuke if you’re staying close to home. I would think you could also afford to buy several of them for the price of one nuc, with lower maintenance and operating costs as well.

Again, though, that’s just my armchair admiral-ing. Feel free to correct me if I’m off base here, folks.

Given the record of the French nuclear carrier, the Brazilian attempt to build a nuclear anything with the French should keep cartoonists busy for years.

The French carrier even lost a blade off one of the propellers.

Bad Froggie, BAD, BAAAD Froggie!

The Brazilian nuclear weapons program was abandoned a long time ago.

You betcha.

We haven’t talked about the USS Jim Robinson’s offensive capabilities; but I would assume at least some nuclear tipped cruise missiles would be included.
