Minnesota gun-rights advocates to propose own law changes

In a turnabout, Minnesota gun-rights advocates are lining up modest revisions to the state's gun laws as a way to fend off more serious restrictions and give lawmakers the chance to make some progress on a politically charged issue.

Expected to be introduced next week, the bill would be an alternative to a House Democrat's gun-control package that party leaders concede probably lacks the votes to pass. That reflects the dynamic at the Capitol, where gun measures divide legislators more along geographic lines than party lines -- many rural DFLers won't support taking a harder line.

National Rifle Association lobbyist Chris Rager said the alternate bill will have at least 68 House co-sponsors drawn from both parties, "more than enough to show the votes are on the floor" to pass the bill. A Senate companion is also in the works.

The NRA-backed bill is expected to include some measures from the competing legislation, such as provisions that would target so-called "straw purchases" and help county attorneys crack down on illegal gun owners. Straw purchases involve an eligible person buying a weapon for someone who legally cannot. The bill also addresses funding for mental health facilities and adds to the parameters of what would disqualify someone from legally owning a gun.

Simply prohibit registered DFL or Democrats from owning, renting, borrowing or possessing firearms or ammunition.

They're the ones doing all the shooting.

No new laws. Enforce the laws in place.

They should be proposing more relaxed gun laws. Make the gun-grabbers fight for every square inch of turf. If they want to propose gun laws in one direction, why shouldn’t we be able to propose gun “laws” in the opposite? Clog up the legislative process with more bills, make them be discussed and voted on. Let the libs pay attorney fees to fight them in court.

How about a section prohibiting the sale or possession of firearms, magazines, or ammunition to local, state, or federal law enforcement officers that are not legally available to the general public?

A man after my own heart. I have written my pols, the NRA and GOA to propose the following "common sense" gun laws (tongue very faintly in cheek):
1) Allow CCW holders to have guns shipped directly to them as long as they send in a signed 4473 (that can be addressed later - small steps, small steps). The holder has already been photographed and fingerprinted, plus passed the state and federal background checks, so this should be a no-brainer. Presently the law is just another costly hindrance.
2) Allow CCW holders to buy handguns in other states for the reasons stated above.

These others use the liberals' "throw everything at the wall and settle for one" proposal:
3) Reduce the 30-day holding requirement for a failed background check down to one - or none.
4) Allow direct shipment of modern-made replicas of any gun under the BATF's 50-year rule. Why should gun buyers have to jump through modern gun hoops to buy a single shot 45-70 Springfield or Sharps? (The lever actions can come later under the small steps approach).

Counter-proposals like these will have the libs running around and screaming in horror. Good. Perhaps it will blunt some of their anti-gun efforts and even scare some of 'em into thinking they'd better not propose any new laws as "look what the other side wanted the last time we tried", i.e. leave sleeping dogs alone.

We should be matching their proposals, law for law with OUR idea of what gun rights should be in a FREE America. Let’s start by REPEALING the ridiculous Gun Free School Zones Act. No-one obeys it anyway...any school can vote to place armed security if they choose. Let responsible adults carry and the next Adam Lamza will be cut down like a dog.

This should be required viewing for any politician tasked with voting for/against unconstitutional infringement of the 2nd Amendment.

I would also like to see this on every network numerous times. The NRA, Tea Party, Conservatives must make a commercial out of this.

How stupid can you get? The DFL can’t pass their gun grabbing bill, so let it die. But noooooo.....the ignorant politicians, who want the corrupt media to show them some love, are actually proposing Gun Control Lite in that futile effort.

Once a gun control measure passes, it is the foot in the door that will one day end with a full-fledged gun ban.

My first, and current, thoughts too. Helping the grabbers out by imposing controls on yourself is so....so.... GOP-like.
