My mother was sent to a working farm when she refused to join the party. I used to think she should have just joined and given lip service, but she said she couldn’t do that. It took a long time for me to understand that kind of defiance. And now she’s distraught at what is happening here.

my dad was a civilian child in a Jap concentration camp. He lived in the European section of Tsingtao China when the the Japanese invaded. He and my uncle never “got over it” although they got freed by the Americans after 3 years. Weiheisen is the name of it. Japanese took their house, all their stuff, killed their dog.
