Nancy Pelosi Against Congressional Pay Cuts: We Need ‘Dignity Of The Job That We Have Rewarded’

by Josh Feldman | 4:42 pm, February 16th, 2013 » 154 comments

..... House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi came out firmly opposed to cutting lawmakers’ pay, saying it would be beneath the dignity of members of Congress.

Pelosi told reporters on Thursday that allowing the automatic cuts should be “out of the question,” and responded to a question about whether members of Congress would be willing to accept a pay cut.

“I don’t think we should do it; I think we should respect the work we do. I think it’s necessary for us to have the dignity of the job that we have rewarded…

“”It’s a hard question to ask me because most of my colleagues are the breadwinners in their families. A pay cut to me doesn’t mean as much.”

Congressional salaries have been a sore point for some members of Congress ....

IIRC the pay of legislators can’t be cut during their term.

“No law, varying the compensation for the services of the senators and representatives, shall take effect, until an election of representatives shall have intervened.” (Amendment 27)

That’s in the Constitution (which once had some meaning.)

There was a reason for that—so the congressmen would be free of retaliation.

But now, with automatic pay increases, and automatic cuts, etc.
what became of the constitution—and its protections,

and the ability of the ordinary voter to control his representatives and change things when he sees fit?

It’s beneath the dignity of many Americans to be unemployed forced on government assistance, Pelosi.

Who says we don’t have a ‘ruling’ class in this country.

Another poster mentions it is ‘against the law to adjust their pay while in office’.
GEEEEZ! “Who writes their own self serving laws for 1000, ALEX”

They used to tell us that if we didn’t give ‘them’ decent salaries, the representatives would end up being people that abandon their pregnant girlfriends-allowing them to die, manipulate BJ’s in the White House, drunks, wife beaters, disbarred judges, people of low character that would run a house of ill repute in his basement, crazy people with crazy ideas (island sink, flag on Mars etc etc).
So, I, for one, am glad we pay them enough so we don’t get those kind of people in office.

So, according to Pelosi, those that can and will tell you to stay home, don’t think it is just if THEIR pay was interrupted.
I would sure like to see a couple of people with backbones stand up and ‘forfeit’ their pay BUT it would be futile, as most of the slackers on the Hill not only have NO shame, they have no idea of sacrifice and/or humility - might as well throw decency in there also.

Properly rewarding you for the job you have done would not involve a paycheck, but a rope

Unlike the Dignity of the American worker!
That has had their pay cut due to failed policies and Government spending that has raised taxes for the average citizen.I however would not shame her dignity by cutting her pay>
I would just give her a pink slip so she could explore a new avenue. We have now paid too much for the lipstick that is on that sows ass!
