WASHINGTON — Don't take Steve King lightly.

That's the warning from Sen. Tom Harkin for his fellow Iowa Democrats itching for King to jump into a statewide race.

“I've never underestimated Steve King,” Harkin told The World-Herald. “He is a smart guy. He is a tough campaigner.”

Harkin is retiring after five terms in the U.S. Senate, and the race to succeed him in 2014 could help determine the body's balance of power. The race is viewed as a toss-up at this very early stage, before the candidates have been determined.

Why not? There are low standards for political office. Look what's in the Senate now:

With Obama winning Iowa by 6 and King being such a polarizing figure it is going to be tough. The positive being off year election but turnout could be high do to King. As long as the Dems run a good candidate without a scandal it is a tough environment for King. The Dems want to run against him. See MO and Akin, and that was a great environment.

Fortunately, Steve King has more common sense than Todd Akin.
A big turnout in western Iowa would tell the tale.

Sounds to me like a not-so-subtle warning order to the “media” to start ramping its massive opposition research operation vs. King. The libs could never stand the likes of King winning a seat populated by one of the most lionized liberals in the country.

As was (tragically) Indiana, once Mourdock self-destructed.

Bruce Braley is clueless, he doesn’t even know the rules of the Senate. Braley is a trial lawyer, congressman who has a ZERO rating from Conservative Union and is the author of “cash for clunkers”, and a huge supporter of Obamacare. Is Braley a “good” candidate? Not to you and me but who knows about the clueless average voter. http://theiowarepublican.com/2013/braley-clueless-on-rules-of-u-s-senate/

Harkin plans to retire to his family home in Warren County where he will put the final touches on his Viet Nam era personal retrospective “Wings Over Hanoi.”

Viet Nam era personal retrospective “Wings Over Hanoi.”

Will he talk about John Kerry being in Cambodia in the book?

Kerry wrote about it in his autobiography, “Gigolo Cambodian Admiral.”

Are you saying if the voters had high standards, Steve King would lose?

Oops, my bad...Steve King vs. Stephen King. Visions of the anti-gun horror writer who probably has done as much to promote violence through his books & movies as anyone. But he live in (Maine?), not Iowa. I like Steve King the Congressman.

Thanks for ping.
