Hugo Chávez's Final Words: 'I Don't Want to Die'

Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez died of a massive heart attack after great suffering and inaudibly mouthed his desire to live, the head of the country's presidential guard said.

"He couldn't speak but he said it with his lips … 'I don't want to die. Please don't let me die,' because he loved his country, he sacrificed himself for his country," General Jose Ornella said.

The general said he had spent the past two years with Chávez, including his final moments, as Venezuela's president of 14 years battled an unspecified cancer in the pelvic region.

Heard on the news tonight that they were not going to bury the Hugo. They are going to embalm him and put him on public display like they did with Lenin .... well, all you guys waiting in line to pay your respects at Hugo’s grave better start hunting for a public restroom!!!!

A close relative supervised a major metropolitan hospital’s cardiac rehab facility. Early in her career, she was working with one patient in the cardiac care center and another patient was having a heart attack (or something) across the hall. The emergency people were working to revive this man and he came back for a moment screaming loud enough to be heard across the hall “Don’t let me die - they’re waiting for me!” He expired again and was revived again. His screams of horror were all about somebody or something waiting for him on the other side. Three times he flatlined and came back. The last time whoever it was got him for good.

I don't want to sidetrack this conversation, but I had the same feeling about Chavez and his last words. He knew, or sensed, what was coming. Years ago I was a member at a church that had several EMT's and Parmedics in the congregation. One of them was still haunted by the screams and look of terror on the face of an accident victim, as they died in the ambulance. She had no doubt they'd seen what was coming. Brrrrr.
