The political world changed its orbit Wednesday as Rand Paul seized the spotlight in his March 6 filibuster. Rand Paul -- not this author's favorite before -- is probably now the 2016 front-runner for president. But the difference results from fundamental changes in substance.
How can one day be that big of a deal? Because Rand Paul demonstrated a reproducible, winning formula. It was as if Ronald Reagan were granted just one day to come back to Earth to remind the Party of Lincoln of "how it's done." Rand demonstrated a repeatable formula that all Republicans can copy. It is the template that is significant.
But was March 6 "Republicans' Last Stand" or "Rand's First Stand?" What is most optimistic as the basis for this analysis is that Republican senators started showing up. The Senate floor was more crowded at 10:00 and 11:00 PM than it was at 6:00 PM. They felt it. They saw it. They "got" it. (Excepting one superannuated senator from Arizona.) It clicked. In other words, Republicans might possibly do more of same. If Rand disappears back into the woodwork, then March 6 will have meant nothing.
Freshman Texas U.S. Senator Ted Cruz "got it." Cruz was all over it. Cruz gave voice to the moment best of all. Cruz threatened to go way over the top, reading from the movie "Patton" and Henry the Fifth's St. Crispin's Day speech on the eve of the Battle of Agincourt. Yet somehow, flirting with serious rhetorical dangers, Cruz captured the moment just right. Like a roller coaster, you gripped the car fearing Cruz was going to fly off into mid-air, yet to our great surprise Cruz hit his mark. He grasped the significance, to put it mildly.

Are there any questions?
I don’tknow about “changing the politcal Orbit”, but doing this at the same time Graham and McCain met with Obama exposed them for the political weasels that they are. Moreover, it hopefully will empower true conservatives to stand on principle - unlike Boehner and the posers in the house that passed budget fully funding Obamacare.
I say it changed the political orbit ASSUMING that Republicans follow the example, and I think there are signs that the tea party team of new Senators is going to.
My assumption is that this will be the first, not the last, example of Rand Paul’s approach.
Rand may not be perfect, but as far as I’m concerned, he’s one of our best right now.
I did not catch the whole filibulster, but surely enjoyed the part I did see when Ted Cruz stepped up and helped out with his long question.
The question included “The Speech,” by Ronald Reagan. This speech is very appropriate in today’s America.
Thanks, Ronnie. Thanks, Ted. Thanks, Rand.
Our problem is the lack of true conservatives in the Congress.
The RINO’s have no principals .
I don’t recall the timing that day....Is it possible Obama was trying to lure senators away to prevent or stop the fillibuster? Was Obama trying to split the establishment from the young guns and create a rift, which it did?
The superannuated senator from Arizona and his coy toady from South Carolina turned in performances that were hard to stomach but couldn't be turned away from. Veritable GOP-e portraits a' la Dorian Gray.
Over the years, a lot of people have spent money and credibility on said superannuated senator from Arizona; in retrospect, I'm sorry for ever having given him so much as the benefit of the doubt. Whatever the man has done (or not done) is immaterial: he is unfit for the office he holds and the power that has come with it, and he has been unfit from the beginning.
Mr. niteowl77
mccain always was a very bad pilot. He has never learned to fly straight and he’s too crooked now to even learn.
...and they are surrounded by political weasels in the House that voted to extend Obamacare’s funding another 6 months. Right now there is no Republican Party...there are only Democrats and Democarats-Lite (RINO “Republicans”). I think Paul just became the new center of gravity for un-attached Republicans...those who cannot support what the GOPe is doing in congress right now. Note also that Cruz and Lee are adding their own force of gravity to that attraction.
I just emailed my disgust with John McCain for dining at the White House during the filibuster to his senatorial office
He got you so worried that more people are taking notice, wrapping their minds around the notion that somebody in Washington is actually advocating on behalf of Freedom and suggesting that he'll make a formidable candidate for POTUS, that you have to scream in bold. Sorry, I'm not voting for Jeb.
Rand and Cruz are shaking up the establishment. Good.
I also read where Rand Paul GAVE back over $600,000 dollars from his home state of Kentucky money that was saved due to cutting out waste in their budget. Now that is a leader! Would that a republican would stand up and demand every representative cut 10% out of their budget or it comes out of their paycheck!
“I just emailed my disgust with John McCain for dining at the White House during the filibuster to his senatorial office”
For whatever good it does, I did the same last night. McCain really hacked me off.
Graham and McCain are getting bashed and bashed bad on their twitter and facebook sites,
