Bystander Fired Deadly Shot, Not Officer
WAFB NEWS 9 ^ | Mar. 8, 2013 | Jim Shannon

There were two big developments Monday in the case of a motorist who was shot and killed along Greenwell Springs Road Friday after a fight with a police officer. Investigators say an autopsy shows the deadly bullet was fired by a bystander, not the officer. Police also announced that no charges would be filed in the case, either against the police officer involved or the bystander who fired the fatal shot into the head of George Temple.

East Baton Rouge Sheriff's spokesman Greg Phares says Officer Brian Harrision was escorting a funeral procession Friday when he pulled Temple over and wrote him a ticket for breaking into the procession. According to Phares, that's when Temple attacked Harrison. Police say Perry Stevens was walking outside of the Auto Zone on Greenwell Springs Road when he heard Harrison yelling for help. Harrison was reportedly on his back with Temple on top of him. That's when Stevens went to his car and grabbed his .45 caliber pistol.

According to Col. Greg Phares, "[Mr. Stevens] orders Mr. Temple to stop and get off the officer. The verbal commands are ignored and Mr. Stevens fires four shots, all of which struck Mr. Temple."

Perry Stevens fired four shots into Temple's torso. Officer Harrison had already fired one shot into Temple's abdomen. With Temple still struggling with the officer, Perry continued to advance toward the scuffle.

"He again orders Mr. Temple to stop what he was doing and get off the officer. Those commands are ignored and he fires a fifth shot and that hits his head. The incident is over with, and as you know, Mr. Temple is dead

Stephens was wearing a neck brace, a body brace, and a leg brace, and walking with the aid of a cane.

Wow! Not a gimp to mess with. I see they spell the Good Samaritan's name differently in that article. Journalism! Somebody shot it in the head.

For coolness and accuracy like that, I’m guessing former military. Any random cop that came to help probably would’ve shot the officer involved in the struggle as well.

OTOH you can take a little fall hit your head on the edge of the counter and it's lights out for good.

I've suffered trauma to my head about 7 or 8 separate times. Some people I know would joke saying that's why I am the way I am, but it surprises me I don't have any serious problems.

IF this had happened in Philly, and IF he wasn't dead at the scene, they could have taken him to...

LOL,

I was thinking that to myself. Nowadays, cops are the ones you have to reign in.

I’m thinking of all those cops in NY who blasted away a the “perp” and only ended up wounding a whole bunch of bystanders, the perp ran off without a scratch.

A whole new meaning to “armed and dangerous.”

I have long marveled at how human beings are simultaneously so tough and so fragile. You think of some of the amazing stories of survival juxtaposed with minor incidents that result in death. That’s just the way it is but it’s kind of hard to reconcile that seeming contradiction.

I remember a time in the USA when the majority of ordinary citizens routinely backed the cops in altercations.
A time when the cops were considered uniformed representatives of the local community, and it was shocking when one of them abused their authority.

While I applaud Mr.Perry for acting.

I myself might have hesitated...

Temple was black. Harrison and Stephens are white.

Best summary of a shooting incident ever!

I used to ponder such things. Now I take a more clear eyed view:

“When your time is up, your time is up.”

When is your time up? Only God knows, and he ain’t talkin.

Filipino college kid in some mid west university did a back flip last week. The story was on Drudge.

Landed wrong, broke his neck, died on the spot. Young kid. Was known to do really good back flips. This one went all wrong, now he’s gone.

Got the whole world in His hands.

“When your time is up, your time is up.”

I don't spend a lot of time pondering it precisely because what you said there is true. As null and void said "it is humbling" though when you do think about it.

I take two lessons from it that I try to push myself to remember and embrace. The first is to not take foolish risks and to be mindful of what I am doing at all times. The second is to not be fearful of doing what is necessary or of taking on big challenges. ie life should not be taken for granted but at the same time should not be guarded and saved for some future time which has no guarantee of coming.

It sounds like a philosophical balance to be maintained but I think that balance is entirely an intellectual exercise. In reality there is no balance to maintain just what is appropriate in the moment to do.

The decedent, in the middle.

"State Representative Michael Jackson of Baton Rouge says the US Justice Department has asked the FBI to investigate Temple's death. Jackson says the point of the investigation is to see if Temple's civil rights were violated. A Justice Department spokesman confirms that the agency is looking into the shooting."

A pistol is what you carry at your side so you can fight your way back to get the shoulder weapon you should have had with you in the first place.

That is, when a crew-served weapon is not available.
