The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office says a homeowner shot a suspect after he kicked in his front door.

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. on Friday night at 532 Hwy 14 in Landrum.

Master Deputy Kevin Bobo tells 7 On Your Side, the suspect’s wife was inside the residence with the homeowner.

The suspect has been identified as Dakota Hester. Authorities say he kicked in the door, assaulted his wife then proceeded upstairs.

Deputies say the homeowner, Jonathan Wofford went into his bedroom and locked the door.

Deputies say Hester kicked open the door and then was shot by Wofford.

Not the actions of someone attempting to protect a beaten woman.

Depends on where you keep your gun, I reckon.

"Jonathan Wofford went into his bedroom and locked the door. "

The man retreated to his bedroom. Not the actions of someone attempting to protect a beaten woman.

Perhaps, but...

1. By retreating to his bedroom, he drew the attacker away from the woman and also gained access to his gun.

2. By locking the bedroom door, he prevented the attacker from taking the gun from him as he retrieved it from its storage place.

3. When the attacker broke into the bedroom, he had clear-cut justification for a self-defense shooting.

I'm not as certain of his intentions as you seem to be.

At first it would not seem so.

By retreating and locking the door, perhaps knowing the abusive fellow would come kick the door in, he set the stage to eliminate the threat once and for all --and without legal repercussions. If this was a pattern of behaviour between the deceased and his spouse, the odds are good that the deceased would finish dealing with (abusing) her later and pursue the guy.

He drew him off, and in such a way that he could finish it.

Whether that was his intent, or sheer flight was, the result is the same.

When somebody kicks in your front door that’s all the legal justification one needs to take the intruder down permanently. There’s no need to close and lock the doors to the rooms you retreat to.

Locking your bedroom door and leaving the woman with the intruder seems to be the actions of a coward, not a protector.

The fact the intruder went after the man indicates to me that he wasn’t a protector but her sex toy and the husband knew it too.

Not knowing the persons involved, that may be.

Could be to buy him time to load the pistol, too. Either way, the guy who was beating the woman is dead. As far as things between the two of them (if there was anything), well, that's between them. It sounds like a mess to me no matter how you look at it. It could be

A cheating woman/righteous but enraged husband shot by philandering feller

Victimized woman/rotten bastard shot by guy friend (no benefits).

...or anything in between.

There are plenty of possibilities, and I don't know any of them well enough to say.

Coward or tactical genius, one is alive and one isn't.

With what? His TV remote? His gun was upstairs, where he went to retrieve it.

There’s no need to close and lock the doors to the rooms you retreat to.

Unless you want to be able to get your gun from its storage place (and perhaps load it) without the intruder jumping you and possibly taking it from you.
