I agree with all that you said, but I am left wondering why they would even use organs from a person who had died of rabies.
Perhaps it would not be so confusing if such articles were not so poorly written.

Actually, I think it says that the donor lived in Florida after moving from North Carolina.
Or were you making reference to the large ‘Rat population in PG?

I signed up for organ donation to be shown on my license many, many years ago. Now, in my golden years, I have often wondered if there are any organs they would want. Can you tell me what the usual policy is?

Was the donor a Democrat?
To: Bigg Red
From the article:
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say doctors did not suspect rabies as the cause of death in the donor and did not test for it.

Thanks for the link to that very eye-opening article. It seems many doctors choose not to inform their patients that the organ being offered to them is 'marginal' or 'extended criteria'. And then there is this "ethicist".
Her attitude worries Zink, the ethicist. ''I would question anyone's motivation in refusing an organ from a drug user,'' she told me. ''They aren't responding to clinical information, because the available clinical data'' -- the anecdotal reports from doctors -- ''indicates that organs from crack-cocaine users are fine, in general. So they must be responding to preconceptions about that person's lifestyle. That's only one small step from declining an organ because the donor is black or Hispanic.''

In the article, they cited an organ donation from a 93 year old. So...

The husband of my physical therapist died of rabies.
To: Berlin_Freeper
The donor was in the U.S. Army. He died of from an undiagnosed condition.

I’ve heard that is very painful way to go. I was bitten by a dog while jogging in Buenos Aires. Since we couldn’t catch the hound, I had to undergo the anti rabies treatment. In 1988 one didn’t have to get the 14 injections in the stomach. I had to have ten injections, five in each hip. Thank God for injection ports.

I’m not advocating for hundreds of other things. And neither is anyone else here. You can over-exaggerate if you want, though.

Imagine how stumped they will be if smallpox makes a comeback.
Does anybody seriously believe that we can eradicate a tiny virus from the whole great, worldwide world outside the various labs that have specimens?

Frivolous?
They knew the donor was being treated for rabies and they still used his organs? The morbidity/mortality committee must have been on vacation. It is insane to consider to use organs from someone who has been bitten by a rabid coon, is being treated for prevention. Res ipsi locitur.

According to CDC, "At the time of the donors death, rabies was not suspected as the cause and testing for rabies was not performed. Rabies was only recently confirmed as the cause of death after the current investigation began in Maryland."

Did they say whose transplant program performed the procedure?
