It sounds like they've forgotten who serves who. The people of Colorado should demand the senators pay be cut in half instead because of their attempt to abuse their power. Their threat should not go unpunished

If the sheriffs do not obey and remain silent, they will be punished? That's not how the American legal system works. I smell a lawsuit if these guys were interested and still have these threats in writing.

Sheriff Maketa releases statement regarding gun control stance

Historically, any citizen would be allowed to speak if they arrived at the Capitol early and signed up on testimony records. Although sign up sheets were in place and citizens including myself signed up, we were completely disregarded. Minutes after I signed up to testify, I learned a different process would be utilized and testimony was based on three categories: experts, preferred witnesses, and public witnesses. No explanation was provided to define expert or preferred witness. I was told this decision was made by the senate president and the chairperson of the hearing committee. Additionally, experts would have no time constraints and all others would be restricted to three minutes.

As I made my way out of the Capitol, I was shocked at the number of people who attended these hearings. It's estimated the number of people in attendance reached 1,000. I spoke to several and was told they just wanted their voice to be heard.

I am not sharing this because of the outcome of the hearings that day; rather I am sharing this because of the process implemented and the faces of all those citizens that were never permitted to participate in the process. Government is supposed to be by the people, for the people and on this day, they were crushed and kicked to the side. Special interest coalitions and hand picked experts with no relevant expertise trumped our citizens.

Sheriff Maketa is thinking more along the lines of criminal charges.

I was there too and was similarly disallowed from testifying.

The one bright spot in this whole totalitarian nightmare has been the sheriff's and their support for the citizen's rights.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t counties and local entities pay their own sheriffs? When did the feds suddenly start handing out these paychecks, and what the hell business is it of theirs if local sheriffs wish to follow the Constitution?

That is a very bright spot too. They are the top LE in each county and elected representatives of the people. It is very heartening to know that should the Feds decide to target me as an object of 2nd Amendment harassment my Sheriff is more likely to stand with me than with them.

It’s not the U.S. Congress that threatened their pay raises it was the CO state legislature. Apparently it is CO law that they set cty Sheriff’s pay levels.

My understanding is the CO legislature sets the salaries of county sheriffs, but I don’t know about where their budgets originate and who pays them. Can any CO Freepers help?

and they are stating that basically we should reconsider our positions to gain a more favorable light for salary support from the Dems...

Incredibly, phenomenally, to-the-bone STUPID.

Lets look at keywords here...

The Colorado Senate is warning Sheriffs who recently testified before them...

Sheriffs as in plural.

Testified as in "it is a matter of record."

So, donks in the Senate itself are suggesting extortion against multiple Sheriffs that have made public statements at proceedings that the Senate donks themselves called?

WOW.

Procedings that were undoubtedly recorded.

I am just absolutely dying to know... were they actually so stupid as to use their own government email accounts to send the threats?

and I suppose virtually every judge in the state who could rule against this is a crook. Just ducky.

Great opportunity to hear it straight for a change.

The Dems had better take a closer look at their plans to “over control” the Sheriff’s pay, never know when they (Dem’s) might need some law enforcement in and round themselves. Might be a bit hard to get a sheriff’s deputy there in time to prevent a break in, rape, fire, etc. and who knows what ever happens. When seconds count, the law enforecers are minutes (and many miles) away.
