I'm not sure if you say this tongue in cheek, but I wouldn't be surprised if within the next 10 years there isn't a real push to ban (or at least heavily tax, a la tobacco) non-diet soft drinks.
Once the government pays for people's health care, then it thinks it has the right to regulate behavior. One of the biggest factors in the restrictions on cigarettes were the medicare/medicaid costs for smokers at end of life. We will see this story again. I have no doubt.
I heard on a local news story this morning that the gubmint are now going to link smoking and alcohol to mental illness. Not fooling ya!
