Food Stamp Nation: A little town in Rhode Island shows where liberalism and all its talk of economic "security" ultimately leads — a stale economy and suffocating dependence on big government.
In a surprisingly candid and lengthy expose, the Washington Post described how Woonsocket, an economically depressed town in Rhode Island, has been turned upside down by food stamps.
With a third of the town enrolled, food stamps have created a huge boom-and-bust economy in Woonsocket, as residents pour into grocery stores on the first day of each month after the government pumps $2 million into their food stamp cards.

that article actually profiled a young couple who couldn’t afford milk for 2 babies but are paying $75 a month on a tattoo parlor loan, $110 a month for cell phones and $360 a month to lease a 10 yr old car
This is nothing new. There are sections of any major city and a lot of dying small towns where the economy is driven by government handouts. In the old days, these people would have moved or found other work. Now a lot of them are content to sit around watching cable TV and surfing the internet until the next government check comes in. And that’s no joke — from what I’ve seen, a lot of these people literally are happy sitting around watching TV, week after week, until the next check comes in. They exist and do nothing productive with their lives.
I don’t live in a particularly depressed area, but it is a rare event if I go to the grocery store and am not preceded by, or followed by, someone in the checkout line paying with an EBT card.

Lot of parasites in the South. I thought it would be NY, MA, CA with the biggest percentages of useless eaters.
No matter how well-meaning programs like food stamps are, they can end up draining the dignity and self-respect of those who rely on them.
NEWS FLASH: these people DON'T CARE about dignity or self-respect. They're living the dream on other people's money.
Even though the Census says this is a 71% white community, the Gibsmedat mentality is alive and well.
Example:
“Yo Trayvon, who you be votin' foe in 2012?”
“I gots to go wit Obama, baby. The democrats be givin out moe betta gibsmedat.”
Synonymous with: tribute, baksheesh, Danegeld
And reason #1 not to be near a city when the EBTs all flash error and die.
In MA, at least, it's probably just a matter of it being percentages.
But yeah, our mill cities, or former mill cities, like Lowell, Lawrence, Fall River, Brockton, etc., are chock-full of food stampers. And the areas west of Worcester are very economically depressed, too - although they are populated far less densely than the areas to the east.
In my own town, I have had the pleasure of paying cash for my own groceries just after watching a woman buy groceries I could not afford with an EBT card, and then watching her pack those groceries into an SUV I could not afford. Awesome.
The census says 71% white,
but doesn’t the article say 30% of the population is on foodstamps?
There’s nothing that says the food stamp population is a proportional demographic representation of the community.
Also, there is a distorted part time economy where SOMEONE is working at stores that supply the gibsmedats.
Jeff Foxworthy joke about "you might be a redneck if you have ever bought a tattoo on time payments" has come to life.
