This is nothing new. There are sections of any major city and a lot of dying small towns where the economy is driven by government handouts.

In most cities, this section includes a street named "Martin Luther King" and another named "Cesar Chavez".

NEWS FLASH: these people DON'T CARE about dignity or self-respect

Exactly. People who moan about how these programs cause people to lose "dignity" or "self respect" are completely missing the boat. There is a large chunk of the population -- of ALL colors including white -- who could care less about the dignity of work and who aren't the least bit embarassed about sitting on their asses all day watching TV or chatting with the neighbor until the next check comes in.

RI has been a mess for a long time. Providence has been the center for the Italian mafia in New England for 100 years. The former mayor of the city went to prison. It is a democrat wastland in what is one of the prettiest states in the country. It is a sailers paradise. There is hundreds of miles of coastline in a state the size of some counties in Texas.

It also is a haven for illegal immigrants and corrupt govt. It has the highest unemployment in the northeast. Believe it or not, it is much worse than Mass. This is also the state that had one of the first cites to declare bankruptcy(Central Falls). It is really screwed up.

There is a reason NH has a much lower food stamp percentage than every other state in the northeast. It is much harder to get on and stay on govt assistance here than the surronding states. Therefore, if you are a slacker, you do not mover here. This is why our unemployment rate is also lower. These states have done it to themselves.

Many of these people also work under the table for cash. The do all sorts of jobs: roofing, landscaping, painting, cleaning, etc.

I knew a guy that took sports bets and made an extra 15k a year just during football season. He eventually was a big proponant of a national sales tax.

“In my own town, I have had the pleasure of paying cash for my own groceries just after watching a woman buy groceries I could not afford with an EBT card, and then watching her pack those groceries into an SUV I could not afford. Awesome. “
Young people see this and learn from it. That is why businesses can not find willing or qualified workers.

Question: How much food do they grow inside the beltway?
What happens when “free food” stops coming into the cities?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
To the ‘never had a job doin nuttin’ crowd, that food just magically appears on the shelves every day.
These same idiots will raid the empty store, then prevent delivery trucks (that dare) from restocking, then riot because there is no food on the shelves...

Reminiscent of the ‘person’ who complained about someone shooting a deer, butchering their own hog or steer etc and coming up with the old ‘Why are they so cruel? Why can’t they go to the grocery store and buy the stuff that is already there and packaged? That way they wouldn’t have to kill an innocent animal’...
Yes that vote counts just as much as yours and the fool will probably get a ‘bonus’ for voting..or at least a ride to a couple different polls — “I had to vote twice because I wasn’t sure the first one ‘took’”.

Before welfare reform with workfare, the way government tried to turn people away from welfare was to pester them with petty and cruel requirements, like making them take a three hour bus trip across town to attend a “class” that was nothing more than a sign in sheet, three times a week.

But never, ever, was there a real effort to teach them useful things, like home management, home economics (literally), cooking, cleaning and hygiene, etc.

And then, when any of them really tried to break out of welfare, they would be cut off and slapped down hard, by the people who had been hired to help them.

There was some real hate directed at them from both sides of the political aisle.

The bottom line was that nobody ever figured out how to help them get off welfare, other than workfare. And that was only when unemployment was low. With high unemployment, the problem returns in spades.

I saw a woman with two brats fill up two bags of grocery's[mostly junk food], pay with a state edt card at a gas station.

Heading to a tailgate party? Maybe she needed some munchies to go with the brats.

Sorry...

Too bad reproductive sex isn’t a two step process, with step A having to occur before step B. Idiots like this would be far less likely to reproduce. They’d try A+A, or B+B or B+A.....

Imagine if instead of food stamps we had old fashioned lines at soup kitchens and free pantries. 60 million in line for a handout....

The “optics” would be bad.

Now they have something that looks like a credit card so that they can not be “stigmatized” and look like people who are actually paying for their own food.

If Obama has his way, we'll all end up living like those poor folks in Woonsocket.

...

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."

“Or, “You might be a loser” if you have a tattoo.”
LOL
I was just explaining to a young co-worker yesterday (when she displayed her new tatoo) how when I was her age, a high tooth-to-tattoo ratio was the indicator of a desirable female.

I also like to tell the kids that the new tattoo they are so proud of will make it much easier to identify the body.

With a third of the town enrolled, food stamps have created a huge boom-and-bust economy in Woonsocket, as residents pour into grocery stores on the first day of each month after the governmentTAXPAYERS pump $2 million into their food stamp cards.

Rhode Island is the size of some cities in Texas. Some counties in Texas are the size of Georgia!

that article actually profiled a young couple who couldn’t afford milk for 2 babies but are paying $75 a month on a tattoo parlor loan, $110 a month for cell phones and $360 a month to lease a 10 yr old car

Do you have a link to that WP article? I can't seem to find it posted here on FR (I could easily be missing it, though).
