I have never understood why people want to climb mountains. British climber George Mallory in 1924 famously said “because it’s there” but hell so are volcanoes but people don’t voluntarily climb into them “because they are there”. Now I understand there were no helicopters in 1924 that could transport you to the top of any mountain so maybe I can cut old George some slack. But as for Sir Hillary, there were helicopters available when he did it so no excuses for him! :-))
Because they're there.
After climbing many mountains, I understand. I also understand why those who have not done so will never understand until they have done so, when they will immediately understand.
