Rowan & Martins Laugh In had debuted on NBC as a one-time substitute for their Sunday night tradition, The DuPont Show of the Week, in 1966. It got a Monday night slot on that network in 1967 and stayed there for years. In various blackouts, the line, Sock it to me, was stated by British actress Judy Carne just before she was doused with water. Carne, who had starred in the CBS/BBC series Fair Exchange in the early Sixties, hated that, and her career effectively floundered.
Bob Crewe knew a trend when he saw it, and he put this song out for one of his pet groups, formerly Billy Lee & the Rivieras. It made #7 this week.
There are two versions of this single, one with the F-word and one without. This is the clean version.
