Mystery Surrounds Death of Teens in Bothced [sic] Texas Burglary

Two Oklahoma teenagers are dead after a shootout with a Texas couple whose house they were attempting to rob on Wednesday, March 20. The gunfight between the homeowners and the two teens ended unexpectedly when both of the teens, independently of each other, took their own lives.

A woman was home at her Maypearl, Texas ranch Wednesday afternoon, watching television, when she heard her back door rattling. When she went to see about the noise, she came face to face with an armed man trying to get in.

She called her husband, who was outside on the property, and got her gun. CBS DFW reports that she fired a warning shot at the intruders.

Her husband arrived and met the two men outside of his house. Kenneth Chaffin, 17, and Dillon King, 18, both opened fire.

The husband was able to retrieve two rifles from inside house, and return fire. Authorities believe he hit King in the foot. He went down in a field beside the ranch house.

The husband was also hit, though superficially. He did not pursue Chaffin, who retreated to a stolen pickup truck the pair had parked in a field near the house.

Law enforcement, responding to the wife’s 911 call from within the house, found the King dead not far from the house. Though King had been shot by the homeowner, the nature of his injuries suggest that he took his own life.

Deputies used dogs to search for Chaffin. “While we were going into the field, we heard another shot,” Lt. James Saulter, of the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, told CBS DFW, “which we believe was the second suspect taking his own life.”

“Been awhile since Texas beat Oklahoma.”

Yup, been almost a whole 3 months since the Cotton Bowl...

That’s a fact, jack! Also one big reason you don’t hear about riots in Texas...... don’t give us a legit reason to take out the trash.

Just the thought of dating Leroy for 4 years in Huntsville was more than they could take.

Why is this a mystery? It looks pretty obvious to me. Kids decided to act out some fantasy from their gaming, picked on the wrong people, got shot and killed themselves.

Sad, true and fatal. So sorry, move on.

Not sad....

Just rewards for their actions.

Now, they won’ be a problem in the community for the next 60 years.

Can’t help but feel some sympathy for the parent. The one father interviewed didn’t seem too surprised or shaken up though. I thought that his reaction was strange.

Given the circumstances, I’d wager they had more on their minds than stealing things. Just a hunch.

According to Chaffin’s father his son had recently finished homeschooling and was employed at two Tecumseh area restaurants, no history of trouble with the law or running away, described him as a follower not a leader, thinks somebody got him in over his head in something. Father is baffled, distraught, says his heart goes out to the husband and wife who were subjected to an attempted armed invasion, he’s sorry they had to endure that.

The “stolen” truck was to be given to Chaffin on his 18th birthday.

Photo of King is a cell pic taken while disrobed in a bathroom. Can’t think of too many reasons why an 18 year old male would do that.

Impressionable, sheltered 17 year old somehow meets up with an apparently more jaded, worldly 18 year old, and in a fairly short time mayhem and death ensues, with the two making a suicide pact with each other.

Thanks, that makes more sense than the accounts I had read. Often hard to remember how important it is to question news accounts. They are so often extremely distorted, or just flat wrong.

Knowing about OK, I am sure the family feels like you described. Sheltered only works so far, I know from experience. There is a lot of evil in the world.

Based on the info you posted, RC, it seems the two guys may have been gay and in the closet. Might explain the suicide pact...
