Some guy in South Carolina won a half million dollar lawsuit against his former wife’s lover. Adultery is a crime in South Carolina, and the aggrieved spouse can seek civil redress as well, as in most states. The notion that a wife’s boyfriend can be taken to court for damages certainly seems archaic. Not wrong, just out of date.

As Howie Carr said, under Massachusetts law, if your wife commits adultery, you owe her half a million dollars. If you commit adultery, you owe her half a million dollars. Howie, who is twice married, knows where of he speaks.

There’s a specific law in NC called Alienation of Affection that has been used successfully to sue the outside party that intruded into the fidelity of a subsequently broken marriage.
