'Among Left-leaning ‘Hampstead’ liberals like me, there has long been what you might call a ‘discrimination assumption’ when it comes to the highly charged issue of immigration.
Our instinctive reaction has been that Britain is a relentlessly racist country bent on thwarting the lives of ethnic minorities, that the only decent policy is to throw open our doors to all and that those with doubts about how we run our multi-racial society are guilty of prejudice.
And that view — echoed in Whitehall, Westminster and town halls around the country — has been the prevailing ideology, setting the tone for the immigration debate.
But for some years, this has troubled me and, gradually, I have changed my mind.
Over 18 months of touring the country to talk to people about their lives for a new book, I have discovered minority Britons thriving more than many liberals suppose possible. But I also saw the mess of division and conflict we have got ourselves into in other places.
I am now convinced that public opinion is right and Britain has had too much immigration too quickly.
For 30 years, the Left has blinded itself with sentiment about diversity. But we got it wrong.'

Good point, Britain may be small enough to react quicker than us. That being said they could well go either way.Meanwhile we keep letting all the wrong people in all the wrong places over and over.
I wouldn’t say Britain is more cohesive than the US. The kind of expressions of patriotism and appeals to nationalism that are taken for granted in the US would be sneered at as ridiculous and/or whiffing of ‘fascism’ here in Britain.
All I would say for Britain however, is that immigrants, illegal or otherwise, make up a considerably smaller portion of the population than in the US. Illegal immigration in Britain is estimated to be at worst, a little over 1% of population, whereas in the US, it is as high (or maybe even higher) than 4%.

The author states that the mass immigration wasn’t planned; it just happened. I seem to recall that old Labor Party documents have been found that stated that the intent of the liberal immigration decisions was to transform British society and the country as a whole.
Liberals have used all the white nations (with the exception of small handful of Eastern European nations) as their petri dish to try a social experiment that has never worked in man’s history — multiracial, multiethnic, multiculturalism. The audacity to try such a civilization altering experiment without the people’s consent is mind-boggling. The negative outcome was foreseen by many who were denounced as racist, xenophobic, and bigoted. In reality, they were truthful, thoughtful, and patriotic. When, not if, events turn sour, the Liberals who refused to listen to their own people will be to blame.
There's an easy solution - make sure all ‘immigrants’ in the same proportion they live in England - ALSO live in upper class neighborhoods. Allow the liberal elites to bask in the joy of assimilation - share the joy with them... and maybe they'll become more sensitive...

Is British culture & tradition worth preserving in Britain?
I believe it is, as are all cultures in their native countries. This world would be an awfully dull place if everybody was exactly the same. What makes the human race so vibrant is its many different people. Those differences should be celebrated, not homogenized.
When immigrants will not integrate they become colonizers. Colonialism is but invasion by another name. It should be fought as any invader should be. Those immigrants who refuse to integrate & advocate separatism should be expelled. Potential immigrants should understand & agree to this prior to approval. Basic understanding of the language, customs, & laws shoud be required. Above all, the laws of the land should apply to all without exception or regard for foreign customs.
Basically when liberals get in power anywhere in the world, they wreak societal havoc that is difficult to contain or squelch. Nipping it at the start is the obvious solution, but like a number of posters said, what do you do when the toothpaste is out of the tube?
