NYC Mayor Bloomberg: Government has right to ‘infringe on your freedom’
The Washington Times ^ | March 25, 2013 | Cheryl K. Chumley

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Sunday: Sometimes government does know best. And in those cases, Americans should just cede their rights.

“I do think there are certain times we should infringe on your freedom,” Mr. Bloomberg said, during an appearance on NBC. He made the statement during discussion of his soda ban — just shot down by the courts — and insistence that his fight to control sugary drink portion sizes in the city would go forth.

The problem is that our choices were horrific. And then he squeezed out a third term with the help of Quinn who is probably the next mayor. It’s a bad scene.

might makes right + ends justify the means + government knows what is best for you = paternalism + tyranny

Spoken like a true Liberal hypocrite.

He thinks the government has a right to infringe on your freedoms WHEN HE THINKS the government has a right to infringe on your freedoms, just not when he thinks the reverse.

Liberals can do this because they do not have a clear Constitutional foundation on our Liberty in the first place. To them our Liberty is what they say it is and not what they say it isn’t and that is the only basis of their thinking on Liberty.

I don’t know why people waste their lives north of the Mason-Dixon Line. I’m not a neo-confederate, but if the Civil War were fought today, the North would lose in about an hour. Nothing but bedwetters.

True. Sad to say, some "conservatives" engage in the opposite hypocrisy.

Probably brought on by the Yankee diaspora, fleeing Democrat policies, crappy weather, and an out of control cost of living. They’ve already ruined Florida.

One of your earlier comments stuck with me:

“as if it were the mythical land of Mordor rather than a real place.”

You’re right. NY is very ‘unreal’ to me.

All these nanny bans are foreign to most Americans. But the thing that struck me the second I read your comment: NYC has a 41% abortion rate. It really did. That is bizaro world stuff for most people.

Look, NYC deserves the politicians it elects. I don’t care who Bloomberg bought, etc...and to just ‘accept’ that as an unsurpassable obstacle is very telling in itself. To me, its just a matter of fact notion that NYC is a reliably liberal enclave, and has been for years. The ascendancy of Bloomberg (who was once had GOP by his name) only reinforces that notion. I’m not mad about it. Its just the way it is.

Think about how accepting of the system New Yorkrs have become:

a) Bloomberg can’t run a third time, its the law. No problem, he just uses power and influence to change the law.

b) Perhaps Bloomberg should be recalled, since he doesn’t plan to run again and is not fulfilling the will of the people who elected him. Impossible. No recall elections in NY, its the law.

In your own words, ‘he is going for broke, introducing anything that enters his head’. Yet nobody cares to stop him. It seems New Yorkers are willing to wait him out. That’s what I call not giving him much resistance.

A body guard gives ‘access’ ~ you have to assume denying access to firearms means you can’t even be near them.

People like Bloomie should be made to fear their constituents.

Last week we had people at the capitol in Lansing Michigan fully and openly armed watching legislators on the floor. Aside from a few bedwetting democrats, nobody said a word.

And if he lived in 1776, his ass would have been booted up to New Brunswick. He would’ve been OUR problem then :P

Bloomberg can’t run a third time, its the law. No problem, he just uses power and influence to change the law.

It was a city ordinance.

The city council approved it, and they can change it.

They did change it.

Laws in every municipality in America are routinely changed through the use of political influence. It is not unique to NYC.

Impossible. No recall elections in NY, its the law.

There are two things you can do - ignore the law and hold a recall election anyway, which would be interesting street theater, but still not legally binding. Or you could lobby the state legislature to enable recall elections, which has been done. And it has been killed in committee.

Yet nobody cares to stop him.

They do care, and they do try.

Just because they have not been able to penetrate Bloomberg's formidable legal defenses does not mean they don't care.

“it sounds like a nice third world country.. you’re right. La mordida, the wink that’s what’s wrong. no moral fiber to build upon, just a dog eat dog society living off the scraps from the bossman’s table. pathetic.”

It's the same exact thing anywhere a government has power to tax, imprison and/or punish. The only place it briefly does not exist is on the Frontier, where government has yet to sprout its corrupt, thieving roots.

It’s more obvious in cities because there is more activity in a smaller area but the same “good ole boy” network exists anywhere government does.

“I don’t know why people waste their lives north of the Mason-Dixon Line. I’m not a neo-confederate, but if the Civil War were fought today, the North would lose in about an hour. Nothing but bedwetters.”

Yea, just like everyone in the South is a beer chugging toothless idiot redneck who beats their wife and eats roadkill. The thieving government and their minions in the MSM thank you for promoting their stereotypes and playing into the old “divide and conquer” game.

What do think the purpose of the Republican and Democrat parties are? Divide the people and take turns stealing their gold…

Notice he used the word “we” when talking about the government. That’s the way all politicians think. “We” is special!”

How did he get elected? Because he had an “R” after his name and many believe, including many on this forum, that that’s enough.
