It is disgusting that it took huge public outrage for the apology Excuse me, but there should never have been any charges against the student in the first place. The very second he reported the professor’s assignment, the professor should have been the subject of inquiry, investigation and possible dismissal. This is bassackwards.
He is writing a book about Obam called “The rise of a Mythical Hero”???

Seriously, the dean and this professor need to be facing individual and several civil liability suits with all their private assets attached.
If the exercise were carried out as written above, it would have been very different.
The exercise expected students to resist, which would then lead to the discussion of why. This "professor" went further, forcing the resisting students to actual stomp on the symbol.
The exercise could equally have been written to put an American flag on the ground, or to burn a paper copy of the flag with a cigarette lighter, to achieve the same discussion goals.
The "professor" was completely at fault for not following the lesson plan as written.
Of course, my post presumes that there is a valid point to the exercise if this were a university-level critical thinking class. Given that the "professor" is the head of the county Democratic Party, I would suspect that his goals were more to tear down existing cultural symbols in the minds of children, not to teach them to explore the significance of the symbols to themselves.

Why didn’t he have the students write the name Allah on a piece of paper and stomp on it?

Students should boycott his classes until he is fired.
The object of the lesson was to have the student respond rationally to the comment without letting his anger get the better of him.
The professor would then deconstruct the insult logically to show students how to respond to offensive remarks.
Amen to that.
What on earth could possibly have been the academic justification for this “assignment”? The whole exercise is reminiscent of Feudal Japan forcing suspected Christians to trample the fumi-e.
And any prof who kicks his student out of class because he or she intends to complain to the administration is nothing but a punk. Deal with it like the professional you’re supposed to be.
When will they announce that they are firing this turkey?
I agree. I hope that the students gets rich on this deal.
