If you refuse to allow LEO to search your car without a warrant, the will call for a drug sniffing dog, usually just any old dog will work for this, then they claim the dog “indicated” something giving them probable cause.

Private land vs. public land, I believe.
If you're driving your car on public roads, that gives the cops latitude that they wouldn't have were the car sitting in your driveway.

Because the car is on public property, and nobody requires a warrant to walk around on public property, drug dog or no.
