What do you think of the strategy of looking at the historic price ratio between gold and silver to determine which is the “buy” at this time?

Nailed the low print on SLV today 27.38.

I’m not a big fan of the etfs but as long as the metals are trading in these tiny ranges, ain’t no other way to *trade*. To accumulate, my reco is to assume the metals are smarter than you are and add smallish amounts on dips.

One of the few smart things I did was start buying what silver I could at $7. What you said is what I say to non believers.

considering it was over $1700 a month ago....

30 days ago gold was $1588. As I type it is now $1605. Not too large a move. Now six months ago it was higher but Five years ago it was under $1000. Not too shabby. I was late and started buying at $400. Silver is even better. I was a buyer at $5.00. That is better then 'not too shabby'.

One nice thing about APMEX is, even though their freight is highish (usually $25) is that you can buy metals 24/7 on an overnight dump, if you give them a credit card. With that order, you notify them that you intend to follow up with a personal check as pmt. Send the check (right away) and they will not charge your CC and thus you get a better price. Two weeks later, after your check clears, you get your metal. Very reliable source, though not necessarily the cheapest. But this saves either/both the premium charged for CC sales AND a wire xfer fee. There is NO escaping certain frictions in the metals unless you have a cash-over-the barrelhead transaction. Even then, you still have to pay the seignorage on any form, eg; $1/oz or so on generic forms, $2.79 or so on Silver Eagles. I *have* seen .69 premium from Gainesville.

When it comes to newspapers - never pick a fight with them. They buy ink by the barrel.

When it comes to central banks - never assume they can’t overissue the paper money. They too buy ink by the barrel.

"Ammunition is the commodity to be in."

Yeah, I've thought about this some and I figure that if TS really HTF, a silver eagle ain't buying my can of Dinty Moore.

I buy some Silver Eagles, a few bars, but most of my effort goes into stocking up on stuff that I can use or trade. I've bought a bunch of canned goods, small bottles of propane, water filtration systems-everyday kinds of stuff- and hopefully, a cash cow in the form of a Dillon 550. It was getting hard to find as many components as I wanted for that, but the past week or so I've been seeing some around. I sure hope that I don't NEED them, but...

I should add: as a way of managing physical risk I have about half my silver stored in vaults in London, Zurich and now Singapore.

How do you expect to get to it when the SHTF? If you don't hold it, you don't own it. Just ask Germany.

Heck, at least you can actually still FIND gold or silver.

Ammo, not so much.

I’ve added ammo to my “accumulation” list. Small purchases over time is building up a good stock of all. I buy my silver either locally or through Independent Living Bullion. They are at
http://www.independentlivingbullion.com/.

They have an monthly plan where you pay a monthly amount and they get your gold or silver assigned and move any partial into the next month. I have it shipped every 3 months to save on shipping costs.

It allows me to accumulate rather painlessly. Of course, I wish I had started back when silver was $7!

That bullionvault website is interesting.
Can you go to the vault and directly take out your gold if you wanted to? Or is it just on paper?
(ie in London or Singapore, etc?)
