Outstanding, Kathy!

My Dad was quite good at knot-making, having gone through Navy Boot Camp in WWII. He used to show us how to tie bowlines, etc. during his later life. By the time I joined the Navy, there was absolutely no training in knots or, for that matter, any other aspect of marlinspike seamanship.

About the only thing I learned about knots in the Navy was the difference between a square knot and a granny knot - and God help you if you tied your kerchief in a granny knot!

I ended up in the hospital at Fort Thomas, Ky. with a case of the Mumps. After two weeks in the hospital I went back to Lexington, but had to wait another week to get in sync with the right subject. While in bed in the hospital one day, I heard someone yell 'halt'. After the second shout, there was the sound of a shotgun blast That stopped the party that should have halted. If he survived, I don't know. Upon completion of the school, I was shipped, by train, to a Replacement Center at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. I don't know the vintage of the train, but it had kerosene lamps hanging from the ceiling.

The shear engineering, sweat and improvisation that went into that road was astounding.
Then they had to fight the Japs off.

No, there were always bigger stories....too many, and too many heroes dead. God rest their souls!

Long, long ago I used to teach knot tying to my brother’s Webelos den. And I don’t remember what age, but teaching the little guys how to tie a tie. LOL!

Indeed. There were a lot of “forgotten” campaigns that have stories of heroism, perseverance and even victory that have been lost in the mists of time...and no media outlet to tell them.

When men were men. Men such as your father have my deepest respect as they tried hard because life was so uncertain, yet, they succeeded, each in their own way. They built what my generation knew of this country and they forged our thoughts. RIP.
